Baltimore Barons pitcher Scott Stratton delivered a solid performance yesterday, leading his team to a 2-0 shutout victory over the St. Louis Sox. In his first pitching start of the season, Stratton scattered seven hits over nine innings, striking out three without allowing a single walk.

"Scott is good at getting out of jams," Barons manager Roberto Mandujano said after the game. "He seems to thrive when he gets behind in the count or has runners on base. It’s like he uses the batter’s aggressiveness against them."

In addition to his pitching, Stratton has also made three starts as a batter this season, posting a .294 batting average. His versatility continues to be an asset for Baltimore.

Elmer Smith of the St. Louis Roughnecks made a powerful impression in his first start of the season, throwing a 7-hit shutout to lead his team to a commanding 10-0 victory over the Brooklyn Hitmen. The 25-year-old left-hander allowed just one walk and struck out two as he cruised through the Brooklyn lineup.

"Smith certainly pitched a strong game against us today," Brooklyn manager John Rallis said. "He was in a groove, throwing everything for strikes. Throwing hard. Changing speeds. I hope we miss him next time."

Smith, who also made one other appearance this season as a batter with a .200 average, proved himself as a key player on both sides of the field for the Roughnecks in their early-season win.
