Pitching Priority in '81 Draft
The Mets emphasized increasing depth on the mound at the 1981 MLB Draft. They plucked New York native LHP John Franco in the first round with an eye toward the future of the back end of the bullpen.
In the second round, the Mets selected LHP Tom Browning, who could be an instrumental part of a starting rotation in a few years. Round 3 saw 3B/C Pat Borders land with the Mets and lanky RHP Mike Maddux was picked in Round 4.
The Mets took a flyer in Round 5 and grabbed a 21-year-old CF with a hose in John Elway. Kid may spurn us for the NFL but we are willing to see how this pans out.
