Accidentally the Zephyrs nickname turned out to be very good one for the New Orleanians.
There was wonderful amusement park in New Orleans named Lake Pontchartrain. It was a fantastic place with rides galore, arcades games, great food, all on the banks of Lake Pontchartrain. It was a New Orleans institution for 50 years... 1930s to the 1980s. It was the place to be in the summertime. Each night at 7 o'clock there would be a popular singer or group -- Elvis was there in the 50s -- or circus act like the Flying Wallendas... and it was free admission... no charge for the great entertainment... you only had to pay for the food and rides.
Naturally, it would be assumed that the team was named after the Beach’s ride, but it wasn’t. The baseball club had relocated from Denver where it was named after the Rocky mountains’ rushing winds, known historically as “zephyrs”
