MLB Standings
The Royals extend their lead by a game over the month of June. The Red Sox had a stellar month, going 18-8, to lead the AL with 49 wins, 5 games ahead of the Yankees for the division lead and 6 games ahead of the Royals as best of the American League. The Phillies have the best record in baseball though, at 49-30; with the Pirates one game back joining the Red Sox and Phillies as the only three teams with a winning record above .600.
Kansas City Results
Kansas City has another average month, a 14-14 record leaves the Royals clinging on to the division lead thanks to their fast start to the season.
While the AL Central is tight, the divisional results have gone the way of the Royals; a 2-1 series victory on the road over the White Sox, coupled with a split 4-game series in Minnesota leaving Kansas City at 14-8 for the season.
The Royals claimed three of four series against AL teams, home victories against the Avalanche and the Red Sox and an on the road 2-1 victory over the Rangers. The good work was somewhat undone getting swept in Los Angeles, the 36-46 Angels winning all three.
Kansas City lost both inter-league series, at home to the Padres and on the road to the Rockies, before splitting two games against the Braves to finish the month, series they will finish in July.
Kansas City Team Statistics
The Royals remain middle of the pack for hitting, with a less than stellar pitching performance and defence. For the first time, it is power (gap specific as the Royals are 4th in extra-base hits) rather than average (8th) that is keeping the Royals above water; similarly, the starting rotation (4th - 3.99 ERA) is out-pitching the bullpen (6th - 3.78).
Billy Mumaugh (157 wRC+) had a strong month, although his 4 HR ranking 3rd on the team is more a reflection of the team than his performance, which was based on his .400 OBP. On the basis that the Royals go as
Bobby Witt Jr. (114 wRC+) goes, there was general happened from fans and front office as he had a good month with the bat and a positive (0.4) month of Zone Rating. He also won AL Player of the Week for the week of 7-13 June.
Luis Garcia (98 wRC+) has done a solid job stepping in for
Marcos Paz (on rehab assignment in Omaha) and has likely ensured he will be retained to cover for
J.J Paniagua as well.
Cade Townsend (217 ERA+) went 3-1 over his 6 starts, striking 30% of the batters he faced although
Mason Barnett’s (60 ERA+) challenging season continued with a second poor month, although a .341 BABIP suggests some unluckiness (or weak defence support).
Jonathan Fleri (149 ERA+) had a solid month on his call up, although the rest of the bullpen struggled.
Wen-Hui Pan (27 ERA+), in particular, had a rough month with a 2.19 WHIP and a FIP over 6.00. Both he and
Jim Porter struggled with long balls, as each gave up 5 HRs in 17 innings of work. The upcoming trade deadline puts some pressure on both to improve in July.
The midpoint of the season came in June with owner John Sherman reviewing Stewart’s performance against his set goals:
- Team Record: Ok
- Improve team stats: Poor
- Extend your player: Achieved
- Improve your fan interest: Failing
- Improve your intl. amateur finds: Failing
The final news came on June 27th as
Wyatt Langford came to Stewart asking about an extension. He is looking for 4 years with a total of $66m. That is a going to be too rich for the Royals, especially with
Goodman and
Mumaugh locked down long-term; an upgrade at 1st Base may in a Trade would be considered as the deadline approaches.
