Nothing actually changes here. The rating that the player has is comparatively based on the position that you have him set to. So setting his position to 2B to make his rating higher and then starting him at SS isn't turning him into a better player.

He is going to be the exact same hitter regardless of what position he is set to and what position he plays. I mean, right? He won't magically become a better hitter when he plays 2B.

The only change is going to be defensively. And you already know his defensive ratings at 2B and at SS. Granted, those ratings could change as he develops experience at one position or the other.

I guess what I'm saying is the rating you see when you set his position to 2B is his rating comparatively to other 2nd basemen. And then when you change his position to SS his rating change comparatively to other SS. But setting his position to whichever rating is higher and then actually playing him at the other position does not fool the game into making him a better player
