Q&A: What do all these abbreviations / acronyms / initialisms mean?
Q: What do all these abbreviations / acronyms / initialisms mean?
A: Before we get into them I should just say we probably overuse these, or at least I probably do. Maybe try to be cognizant of your audience and if you think they might not understand, maybe don't use them. Or maybe just use the full phrase once and put the abbreviation in brackets beside it and after that then just use the abbreviation.
I imagine some people might think it's pointless to list all these, that surely everyone knows them all by now, but some are probably new to some of the people here. They were all new to us once.
OOTP-Specific
OOTP = Out of the Park; to hit a home run or "to do something extremely well"
auto-calc vs re-calc = they're not synonymous; auto-calc has to do with LTMs, re-calc has to do with historical league accuracy
LTMs =
League Total Modifiers; allow you to set targets for your league's overall stats
PCMs =
Player Creation Modifiers; allow you set how good your league's players' traits are in comparison to other leagues
PT = for most people here it means "Perfect Team", the mode of the game where you're acquiring baseball cards
PT = it can also, however, mean "Project Tracker", which is something the devs and beta members use; it's far more common for it to mean Perfect Team now though
RAH = Retire According to History;
"forces players to retire from OOTP after the same season in which they retired in real life"
Skybox - it refers to the sky image you see when playing out games
TCR =
Talent Change Randomness; controls how random/unexpected players' talent changes are; the higher the TCRs the more random, the lower the TCRs the less random
Baseball-Specific
There's really too many baseball-specific ones to list so I'm just going to list some baseball glossaries, and one great video series on youtube, instead:

If you don't know what WAR, BABIP, wOBA, wRC, and FIP mean, you might want to put it on your to do list to look those up in the links above.
Actually, here are some you might not find in those glossaries:
OD = opening day
TD = trading deadline
OS = off season
CD = closing day (end of the regular season)
PreS = preseason
RS = regular season
PostS = postseason
PS = postseason or preseason depending on the context
ASG = All-Star Game
ASB = All-Star Break
HOF = Hall of Fame
FA = Free Agent
IFA = International Free Agent
R5D =
Rule 5 Draft
MiL = Minor League
General / Non-Specific
There are also too many of these to list, but I'm just going to list a handful that a lot of us here use. What I've included in quotes are from the
Cambridge Dictionary (my favourite online dictionary).
AFAIK = as far as I know; "used when you believe that something is true, but you are not completely certain"
AI = articial intelligence; regardless of whether it's the really simple AI like what we've had for years or the more advanced stuff we're seeing more recently
b/c = because
BTW = by the way
ELI5 = explain (it) like I'm 5 (years old); this one is a relatively new one for me, but I really like it as it gives the responder permission to treat you like a complete idiot and sometimes that's just exactly how I want someone to explain something to me, "don't explain it to me like I'm a graduate student, ELI5"
ETA = estimated time (of) arrival; when something is expected to arrive or happen
F2P = free to play; as opposed to pay to win; the option to not pay money to play a game, but to pay in time instead
FAQ = frequently asked questions
FTFY = fixed that for you; usually used when you're quoting someone but changing something that completely changes what they said, often used snarkily; it's probably best not to use it, unless it's on the OT boards
FTW = for the win; used if something cool happened and you're expressing your happiness; has another meaning too, but please don't use it here for that
FWIW = for what it's worth; "used when you are giving someone information and you do not know if it is useful or not"
FYI = for your information; kind of pointless really, even if it's often not intended to be snarky
H2H = head to head; a long asked for feature that's kind of a joke now, don't ask
ICYMI = in case you missed it
IDC = I don't care
IDK = I don't know
IINM = if I'm not mistaken
IIRC = if I recall correctly
IME = in my experience; I used to think it meant "in my (mind's) eye" until one day I typed out "in my experience" and I was like, "oh! that's what it must mean".
IMO & IMHO = in my (humble) opinion; but honestly, even though I myself sometimes use it out of habit, I think it's kind of frowned upon, nearly everything you say is your opinion, you don't need to clarify it
IRL = in real life; as opposed to online
JSYK = just so you know; similar to FYI and also kind of pointless and not necessarily used snarkily
NGL = not gunna lie (not going to lie); "used when you are admitting something that might be embrassing, or when you are trying to make a criticism or complaint less likely to offend someone"
OP = "original poster" or "original post", as in the first post of the thread or the person who started it
OT = off topic; we have a set of hidden boards here that you can opt into that are called the Off Topic boards (there's a how to opt in near the bottom of
the rules page), but they're kind of dead now since religion and politics talk was prohibited so don't feel like you're missing out on much if you don't want to opt in to it; it could also be someone saying that what they're about to say is, "off topic, I know, but..." in response to something else
PSA = public service announcement; "an announcement made ... in order to give the public an important message"
SMH = shaking my head; "used when you do not believe something, or do not approve of it"; or used if you think something is cringe
TBH = to be honest; similar to IMO in that it's not necessary, "what, are you usually lying to us?"
TFW = that feeling when; "used on social media to introduce a funny picture that shows someone's feelings or expression in a particular situation"
TIL = today I learned; used when you're relaying something you yourself just learned
TL;DR = too long, didn't read; "a short summary (a short, clear description giving the main facts or ideas) of piece of writing or a subject of discussion"; used when you know what you said or are going to say is too long and no one will probably read it so you're just going to include a short summary of it here; it could also be used as a response meaning "your post was too long"
Thx & TY = thanks & thank you
UI = user interface; "the way in which the information on a computer, phone, etc. and instructions on how to use it are arranged on the screen and shown to the user:"
UX = user experience; "the experience of someone using a product, system, or service, for example whether they find it enjoyable and easy to use"
w/ & w/o = with & without
WRT = with respect/regard to; could be replaced with "talking about..."
YMMV = your mileage may vary; "to mean that you understand people may have a different opinion or experience to yours"
YSK = you should know; not necessarily snarky
I'm not going to include the ones that include the f word. Please don't use them on the boards, you might even get a warning for using them. We like to try to be a family-friendly site.
Are there any others we should include above?
