One thing to remember though is that the GMs of opposing teams are not operating just to serve us. They are wanting to "win" trades that they make the same way that we do. And the good ole' start high and negotiate down from there has always been a trusted negotiating tactic.
Yes, I agree most offers emailed to us are insane. But again, that's because the computer wants to win that trade. If someone they are offering is someone you're interested in, or if one of your guys that they are targeting is someone you wouldn't mind dumping, you can often negotiate into a more reasonable deal for your team.
Flip the scenario though.... if you are initiating a trade discussion with another team, your initial attempt is going to be for a pretty aggressive "win" on your end, and if the opposing GM doesn't take the bait then you negotiate down from there.
At time it can be annoying receiving so many bad offers when you might not be looking to deal, but as far as "why" the offers start out bad, I get it.
