World Series Game 1 Goes to Pittsburgh Thanks to Colavito
The Pittsburgh Pirates started the World Series in style, downing the visiting Minnesota Twins at Forbes Field by a score of 7-4 to grab an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Pirates left fielder Rocky Colavito hit 2 home runs.
Tied up with the Twins in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Pirates got a boost from third baseman Al Smith. With runners on 1st and 2nd, Smith saw a 2-1 fastball from Harvey Haddix and hit a 2-run double to break the stalemate and put Pittsburgh on top, 4-2.
"We're happy," Smith told reporters after the win. "When you're in the playoffs, you've got to treat every game like it could be your last."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh Tops Minnesota Again, 6-2
The Pittsburgh Pirates got a strong performance from pitcher Bennie Daniels, who stymied the visiting Minnesota Twins en route to a win, 6-2, in Game 2 of the World Series. The Twins could never get a bead on the right-handed Daniels, who threw 7.0 innings of 5-hit ball. The Pirates now hold a 2-0 in the best-of-7 series.
In the bottom of the fourth, with Pittsburgh leading 2-1, right fielder Willie Kirkland hit a 2-run triple. The hit came off Bud Daley and put the Pirates ahead, 4-1.
"We have been clicking right from the start of this series, so our mission statement at the moment is just don't tinker with anything," Pittsburgh manager Vince Barton told reporters.
The next game is set to be played on October 8th, 1961 at Metropolitan Stadium.

Twins Hammered by Cepeda, Drop Game 3 to Pirates
Riding the 4-hit performance of first baseman Orlando Cepeda, the Pittsburgh Pirates flattened the Minnesota Twins, 12-4, in Game 3 of the World Series. Cepeda went 4 for 6 with 2 home runs and a double. He scored 3 runs and drove in 2 for the Pirates, who now lead 3-0 in the best-of-7 series.
In the top of the fifth, with Pittsburgh leading 8-0, Smoky Burgess hit a fastball from Turk Farrell for a bases-clearing double, giving the Pirates the lead, 11-0.
"We don't have much margin for error now," Twins manager Len Okrie said. "We need to figure out the problem and fix it, immediately."

Minnesota Breaks Through for First Win in World Series; Now Trails 3-1
Claude Osteen was not about to watch an opponent celebrate a championship on his home field.
The left-hander pitched the Minnesota Twins to victory at Metropolitan Stadium, staving off the Pittsburgh Pirates, who remain one game away from a title. Osteen threw 6.0 innings of 3-hit ball. The win cuts the series deficit for the Twins to 3-1 in the best-of-7 series.
Del Crandall, who is a seven-time All-Star, contributed to the Minnesota win with a 2-run home run in the bottom of the second. For the game, the catcher had 2 hits in 5 at-bats with 1 home run, 1 single, 1 run scored, and 3 RBIs.
"We were a little off-kilter to start the series, but we're getting things figured out now," Minnesota manager Len Okrie told reporters. "At least, I hope we are."

Pittsburgh Defeats Minnesota
It's party time in Pittsburgh. The confetti is flying and residents are smiling.
The Pittsburgh Pirates have reached the mountaintop, capturing the 1961 World Series today. They defeated the Minnesota Twins 6-1 at Metropolitan Stadium to officially wrap up the series 4-1.
Asked how it feels to be a champion, right fielder Willie Kirkland was to the point.
"It feels great, like a million bucks. I'm so happy right now, not just for me but for all the guys," he said. "We put a lot of work into this and deserve to be champions."
The team is planning a victory parade and fan appreciation day later in the week. Pittsburgh finished the regular season 93-61 and claimed first place in the NL.
