GIMP can read Photoshop files natively, but has a bit steeper of a learning curve.
I switched my Graphics curriculum away from Adobe 5 years ago and have had no regrets. I only miss the layer styles/blending options, and the right plugin provides that anyway.

I feel like I just got my curriculum set for Gimp/Inkscape/Scribus, and I'm tempted for Affinity to be free.
