June 22-24, 2037: vs Detroit (3)

Another good series for the Rays as they took 2 of 3 from the Tigers, and with Baltimore losing 2 of 3 they've pulled to within 1 1/2 of the Orioles.

A 3-run 8th broke open a close game and Tampa Bay took the opener from Detroit 5-0. Mario Urizar (5-6) was in fine form at 6 6 0 0 2 3 and Ruben Abeyta, who came on in the 8th when it was 2-0, stayed in to pick up his 2nd save. Luis Berumen's solo homer (#19) in the first, his 4th in the last 4 games, turned out to be all they'd need.

Rays pitching twirled another shutout in the second game as Danny Morales and two relievers combined on a 3-hit whitewashing of Detroit in a 9-0 win. Morales (3-3) went 7.1 3 0 0 3 5 and had a no-hitter for 6 1/3 innings before giving up a single. Tony Fisher (#17) and Danny Charlton (#7) had early solo homers, while Luis Berumen's power surge continued with a 3-run shot in the 8th (#20), his fifth in as many games, to cap a 4-RBI day. Justin Blackwell also contributed a 2-run shot (#9).

Tampa Bay couldn't quite pull off the sweep as they fell 7-2 to the Tigers, although 4 runs allowed in the 9th belied what a close game it was. Gabe Bryant (3-4) deserved a better fate after going 5 5 2 2 1 6 but only the red-hot Luis Berumen was able to solve Detroit's Ivan Nedelka, one of the league's top young pitchers, with his 21st homer and 6 in 6 games.

Team record: 40-33. Next up: A day off then we travel cross-country starting with 3 in Anaheim against the Angels.
