Another thought comes to me...

Baseball is a 6 month sport. In between we watch other sports - do other things... but if we're true fan of baseball, we read and follow everything that happens over the 6 months the players aren't on the field. This is the "world" of baseball; PLAY for 6 months and PLAN for the other 6.

Perfect Team modifies that habit and makes baseball last 12 months. For the whales, it doesn't matter because their only measurement is how many games you win. Whether it's 162 games or 365 games you need the "better" cards so you can keep up the wins.

For us old-timers, however, there's a lot more to baseball than just the game on the field. The management, the contracts, the personalities, the injuries - and most of that has been stripped from Perfect Team. Add to that fictional players have to be added to the mix in order to provide improvements for 6 months, and it really isn't baseball anymore.

Maybe that's why I can't get in with both feet for 12 continuous months of on-field competition. Much of the game that I love just isn't there. And that's why I keep getting pulled back to the basic game. It's not that I don't enjoy PT in the beginning, but once it starts showing itself as more of a card game instead of baseball, I lose interest.

Maybe it's not a bad thing us old-timers pull out once we hit the invisible wall. We get to return to what we like best, and the whales get a boost from beating up on the "empty seats".

Maybe that's the best of all worlds for everyone.
