There's a checkbox even with the reserve clause where some players (generally stars) sign multi-year deals. It's pretty rare but it does happen. And of course any in-season FA signing is pretty much always going to be for the remainder of the year whether you have that box ticked or not.

I found the "Enable Reserve-Clause Era Rules" check box and it's unchecked.
