From the MSN game recap, linked above.

Quote:
Brett Wisely led off the 10th inning with an RBI single off Sean Reid-Foley (1-2)
Aside from how ridiculous the sentence sounds in a historical context (**** you, Rob Manfred), just consider how the "ghost runner" perverts the basic spirit of the game…the idea that if you get into trouble, you have a chance to get yourself out of it.

Give up a lead-off triple? Strike out the next three guys to save your butt.
Give up 3 runs in the top of the 9th and trail 9-5? Score 5 off of the visiting team's "closer" and it's a W for you.

Every time a pitcher steps on the mound to start a new inning, it's a clean slate. As long as he keeps the ball in the ballpark, he gets to redeem his mistakes.

But thanks to Manly Manfred's Moronic Murdering, now you step out there, and one little single on the first pitch can put you behind. (Cost you the game, if this is the home 10th.) What garbage.

Hey, remember how the Mets led the National League in ERA? Well, heading into yesterday's disaster, the Mets ranked 18th of 30 teams in ERA. The Glory that was April's 12-3 streak is long, long, gone.

Mets season, in three acts (so far):

0-5
12-3
9-21

Yoicks.
