I have seen the same thing happen. My guess is that a different algorithm determines the player of the game and the top performances of the day. The latter probably relies more on longevity, while the former is based on strict WHIP metrics. I don't mind the variety. Reasonable minds, even AI ones, can differ.

What does bother me is the tiresome game summary approach that highlights the wrong thing. "Despite an impressive offensive outburst by the New York Yankees, the Pittsburgh Pirates won the 1960 World Series...." or "Yogi Berra had a big day at Forbes Field yesterday. Pittsburgh won the game on a late home run by Bill Mazeroski". I think it's called burying the lede?
