Detroit used the timely hitting of John Bateman to seize the win. The catcher stroked a 2-run single in the top of the eighth inning to put the Tigers on top, 7-4. It was his only hit in 5 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
"Every team in baseball loses," Phillies manager Dutch Fehring said. "We're in the playoffs and we still have the same guys that got us here. We'll bounce back."

Montanez went 3-4 with a home run, 2 singles, and a walk. He scored 3 times and drove in 2 for the Tigers, who now lead the best-of-7 series, 2 games to 1.
A key moment came with two out in the bottom of the first. That's when Montanez hit a fastball from Jerry Koosman for a 2-run home run, putting Detroit up, 3-0.
"I like easy wins," Montanez told the Detroit Chronicle. "And easy wins in the playoffs are even better."

The 1971 Major League Baseball season came to a close today at Veterans Stadium, where the Detroit Tigers whipped the Philadelphia Phillies 7-4 and won their 5th World Series in history.
Detroit got there by compiling a 106-56 mark during regular season play and claiming the first spot in the AL East Division standings.
The Tigers won the series 4-2 in games.
