Before the 1969 season, four expansion teams joined the AL and NL. In the AL, the expansion teams are the Kansas City Royals and Seattle Pilots while, in the NL, the teams are the Montreal Expos and San Diego Padres.

This caused both leagues to be split up into two divisions: the East and West--the AL West has the Royals and Pilots, the NL East has the Expos, and the Padres are in the West.
