MLB news: Sept. 29 -- Guardians collect wild-card berth
The Cleveland Guardians have assured themselves a place in the upcoming American League playoffs after sewing up a wild-card berth with a 6-5 win over the Boston Red Sox.
Cleveland will finish the season in second place in the American League Central Division, as at 84-69 they sit 9.5 games behind the first-place Minnesota Twins with five games remaining.
The Guardians will likely be the top seed among the wild cards, as they are 4.5 games of the second-place Texas Rangers.
It is the second straight postseason berth for the Guardians, who last season won the AL Central.
Cleveland last reached the World Series in 2016, when it lost to the Chicago Cubs in seven games.
