My response to this would be to ignore the visuals you see on the field. The visuals are wonky at times.... Cutoff men ridiculously out of position (ball hit to deep RF, cut off man taking the cut off in between 2B and 3B) and/or not even used. Like you said, the visuals will at times show the OF'er picking the ball up at the wall and then overshooting the cutoff man, but somehow still will throw a guy out from time to time.

Other examples of this are as I mentioned on another thread, baserunners will slide into home plate when they are already past home plate and halfway to the dugout. Or, maybe a better example that would pertain to your situation, with a runner on 3rd base an OF'er will catch a fly ball and visually it will look like he had to retreat and catch the ball on the warning track but then you'll get a text notification saying "do you want to tag up from 3rd base, the ball is very shallow....." and it's like how is that ball very shallow, the fielder is on the freaking warning track (in that situation, ALWAYS listen to the text and ignore the visual)

Point being, the visuals can be a little choppy or wonky at times and relay-man positioning and/or relay-man usage can be one of those weird things..... but it doesn't actually affect the play or the plays outcome if that makes any sense.
