Combinator cards remind me a lot of twinks from World of Warcraft. If you get, say, a strong silver combinator, even if you level it all the way up it'll still be a silver, and it'll be an extra weapon in silver tourneys even though it plays like a gold (or maybe even a diamond).
It's also going to be a way to prop up market prices on cards, because using all those extra cards for combos will eliminate them...more rarity equals higher prices, even on the "junk cards" but especially on the stronger ones. Great for the folks who want to spend money, not so much for us F2P types.
