June's notable games...

June 1st, 1903

Young Breezes to Shutout Victory
Cy Young of the Boston Americans toyed with the New York Highlanders, as he shut them out, 5-0, at Hilltop Park. He was almost untouchable, twirling a 1-hitter with 4 strikeouts and no walks.
"I'm sweating now because it's hot in here," Young said in the clubhouse after the game. "But it didn't even feel like I was sweating out there."
This season to date, Young has a record of 6 wins and 4 losses with a 2.85 ERA, has appeared in 10 games and struck out 42 in 85.1 innings.

Lajoie Batters Washington Big Time
The Philadelphia Athletics stopped the Washington Senators by a score of 7-2 at American League Park, with the lion's share of the credit going to second baseman Nap Lajoie. The 28-year-old had a career day, collecting 5 hits.
"Every batter wants to have a quality at-bat every time he steps up to the plate," Lajoie said later. "He wants to hit the ball hard."
Lajoie did just that in his 5 at-bats, much to the chagrin of the Senators.
"Not much that I can say," offered Washington manager Jim Manning. "He just hammered the heck out of us."
Nap Lajoie doubled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, hit a two-run single in the 4th, singled in the 6th and singled in the 8th.
In 1903, Lajoie has hit at a .406 clip with 63 hits, 1 home run, 21 RBIs and has scored 24 times.

Keeler Collects Hit Number 2,000
It took quite a few years to do it, but Willie Keeler finally did it. The Superbas right fielder swatted hit #2,000 this afternoon at Exposition Park, but still came up short in the victory column. The Pittsburgh Pirates came away with a 16-1 win over Brooklyn. Keeler was 2-for-4 in the loss.
His career numbers show Keeler is hitting .368 with a total of 23 home runs.

Number 2,000 for Cross
It was a banner day for Lave Cross, who collected his 2,000th hit in the Philadelphia 5-3 win over St. Louis. Cross went 2-for-5 in the game as both Athletics and Browns fans cheered Cross when he reached base after his hit.
"It feels great to get #2,000," Cross said afterward, "especially since we won the game."
Taking a look at his lifetime stats, Cross is hitting .298 with a total of 41 home runs.
