Road Win Lifts Philadelphia to 1-0 Lead in WS
The Philadelphia Athletics started the World Series in dominant fashion, blowing out the host Pittsburgh Pirates at Exposition Park by a score of 12-4 and securing an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Athletics left fielder Lefty Davis went 2 for 4 with 2 singles and a walk. He scored 2 times and drove in 3.
In the top of the fifth, Philadelphia second baseman Nap Lajoie had a productive at-bat. With the bases loaded and no one out, Lajoie stroked a bases-clearing double to right. It made the score 11-3, Philadelphia. For the game, he was 3-6 with 2 doubles. He drove in 3 runs and scored once.
"Every team in baseball loses," Pirates manager Fred Clarke said. "We're in the playoffs and we still have the same guys that got us here. We'll bounce back."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Exposition Park in Pittsburgh.

Game 2, October 9th, 1902, Exposition Park
Raucous Exposition Park Crowd Propels Pirates to 9-5 Victory; Series Tied at 1
The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Philadelphia Athletics, 9-5, in Game 2 of the World Series. Making an impact was second baseman Claude Ritchey, who was 2-3 with 2 singles and a walk. He scored 3 runs. The win moves Pittsburgh into a 1-1 tie with Philadelphia in the series.
An inflection point occurred with two out in the bottom of the fifth. That's when Pirates pitcher Jesse Tannehill hit a cutter from Bob Dresser for a 2-run single. Just like that, Pittsburgh was up, 2-1.
"They say the first rule of the playoffs is to win the home games," Ritchey said afterward. "It feels nice, but it is kind of what we were supposed to do."
Game 3 is scheduled for Saturday at Columbia Park in Philadelphia.

Road Win Lifts Pittsburgh to 2-1 Lead in WS
Riding the 4-hit performance of shortstop Honus Wagner, the Pittsburgh Pirates got a road win against the Philadelphia Athletics, 10-4, in Game 3 of the World Series. Wagner went 4-5 with a double and 3 singles. He scored 3 times and drove in 2 for the Pirates, who now lead the best-of-7 series, 2 games to 1.
A key moment came with two out in the top of the fourth. That's when Wagner hit a slider from Wiley Piatt for a run-scoring single, putting Pittsburgh up, 4-2.
"We're happy," Wagner told reporters after the win. "When you're in the playoffs, you've got to treat every game like it could be your last."

Athletics Clip Pirates, 1-0, in WS Contest
The Philadelphia Athletics got a complete game effort from starter Eddie Plank to move into a 2-2 tie with the Pittsburgh Pirates in the best-of-7 World Series.
The Philadelphia left-hander went the distance at Columbia Park, cooling off the Pittsburgh Pirates and striking out 8 to help Philadelphia take the 1-0 win that knotted the series.
Plank earned the win, going 9 strong innings for Philadelphia. The left-hander allowed just 2 hits, while striking out 8. Pittsburgh hitters had little success against him.
"My gosh almighty, Eddie was tremendous," said Philadelphia manager Connie Mack.

Series tied 2-2

Game 5, October 13th, 1902, Columbia Park
Road Win Lifts Pittsburgh to 3-2 Lead in WS
Game 5 was big. So was Jesse Tannehill.
The Pittsburgh starter rose to the occasion at Columbia Park, leading the Pirates to a crucial 10-2 victory over the Philadelphia Athletics. Tannehill threw 9.0 innings allowing 2 runs as the Pirates won on the road to seize a 3-2 lead in the best-of-7 World Series.
In the top of the third inning of a 0-0 tie, Pittsburgh shortstop Honus Wagner reached on an error by the SSP, driving in 1 run. It broke the deadlock and put Pittsburgh on top, 1-0.
"It's on me," said Athletics manager Connie Mack. "The guys I sent out there today were the wrong ones for the situation. I'll be sure to send the right ones out next time."
The next game is set to be played for October 15th, 1902 at Exposition Park in Pittsburgh.

Game 6, October 15th, 1902, Exposition Park
Pirates Crowned Champions
The Pittsburgh Pirates are champions, today and forever. The Pirates topped the Philadelphia Athletics 4-3 at Exposition Park today to claim the World Series crown.
"Nobody can take this away from us, not ever," said series MVP and third baseman Tommy Leach after his club had sealed the victory. "We worked hard and we accomplished our goal."
The atmosphere was electric as the newly-crowned champs stormed the field at the conclusion of the game. Fans cheered, gloves flew in the air, high fives and hugs were the order of the day.
"From day one of spring training, I could see it in their eyes," said Pittsburgh manager Fred Clarke. "The players had that look of intensity, of hunger, of a desire to accomplish something great, and today they did that. They're champions of the world."
The Pirates took the series 4-2. The new titleholders completed the regular season with a first-place finish in the NL and a 88-52 record.
