Just had a similar situation as this in free agency.
Going into 2025-26 Leon Draisaitl is a free agent who started out asking $12MM for 7 years and NMC. Almost a month into the new season he's still unsigned and now asking $8.8MM for 7 years with NMC, so I offer 6 years near his now-reduced demand, but no NMC. Try 2-3 offers and he turns me down. The next day he accepts a 2-year deal for $8.7MM and no NMC with another team.
I got curious, so I didn't save, went back and made him a better offer (2 years @ $9MM, no NMC). He kept demanding 6 years with NMC. I moved on and again, the next day he signed with the other team for 2 years @ $8.7MM with no NMC.
I have the Blues and he signed with Montreal. Maybe he just takes less to play for them, but there's no indication of that and my initial offer was much nearer to what he was demanding, while my second offer was straight up better. Feels unlikely.
