Thanks for getting back to me. I've been doing a lot more playing with it on my PC (Ubuntu) and steam deck the last couple of days.
It looks like I'm along the right lines, but my fix was wrong. Changing to 32 bit didn't fix it, but removing the 64bit dll was what solved it.
An easier fix rather than messing about with the files is to run it with the launch command:
WINEDLLOVERRIDES=qtexttospeech-sapi-dll=d
That seems to work perfectly on Ubuntu (though I assume it doesn't have text to speech, I don't have speakers on my PC so can't check). On my steam deck it plays the sim, but doesn't draw the arena or the players etc. Just a grey screen and a stadium logo in the middle.
