2306 Rookie Draft: Analysis

This season marks just the second time that the CBO had a 15-round draft, and there was plenty of talent to go around. Whether or not teams develop the talent in their building is left to be seen. Let's analyze some of the top players taken in the draft and look at some of the players who could be CBO-quality not drafted.

1st Overall Pick - CF Missile Crews, Goodneighbor

Strong, speedy, a hard worker, Crews is one of those players considered to be a "can't miss." He now joins the Hancocks, who have had the 1st overall pick two straight seasons, after taking LF Handel Alone last season.

Scouting: Excellent pitch to bat skills means he should have a high average throughout. Body to build into a power hitter, also. Should steal several bases when on the field. Will be a top defender in the CBO even before his bat develops.

2nd Overall Pick - 3B Devin Deux-Gas, The Slog

Can play anywhere on the field but projected as a potential SS for the Ghouls. All-around talent but will not pursue a leadership or front-facing role in the organization. Shows up to play but not a part of the show.

Scouting: Good all-around tools on offense. Best at making contact and turning gap singles into doubles. Good range on defense should help him to play any position that is needed, which will help to keep him on the field every day.

3rd Overall Pick - RF Family Sam Partridge, Lexington

Some injury concerns from his final season at Boston Harbor raises some concerns for his long-term durability. Thankfully for the Synths, he will not be asked to run as much, probably manning either a corner OF spot or 1B. Needs consistent coaching to thrive but definitely among the most talented players in the draft.

Scouting: Tons of raw power that will develop in time to make him a constant home run threat. Good at putting bat to ball, which should see him hovering around the .275-.300 mark. Good hands on defense despite limited range. Can throw out runners trying to advance.

4th Overal Pick - SP Paul Stains, FHE

Throws the ball harder than almost all CBO pitchers for a longer amount of time could make him even better. Was granted an extra year at North Charles Bank to rehabilitate an arm injury. Came back his final season to strike out 236 batters in just 157.1 innings.

Scouting: Five pitches but nothing better than his blazing fastball. Good movement on his speed pitches but will need to work on more movement on slider and curve. Could be the quickest to move up of all the top picks since his arm is already considered CBO-quality.

5th Overall Pick - Keg Gutterson, Quincy

Big man who is much smarter than he looks. Has a heavy swing but considered to be smart at the plate. Will be able to adjust his swing as needed for the greatest amount of success at the plate.

Scouting: Plus-plus power. Could be a consistent .275/30/100 hitter for the Gunners. Sometimes strikes out when the intensity of the at bat is high, so needs some work on nerves. Not a stellar defensive player but could play a solid 3B or 1B in the CBO.

Other Picks of Interest by Round:

2nd round, 20th pick - SP Make Money, Roxbury

Struggled when adding new pitches to his repertoire in 2306, which dropped his stock significantly. The Rad Sox still took a flyer on him, showing that they think they can build him back up. He added a slider and sinker to his three other pitches, but got lit up a lot more when using those pitches. They got better later in the season, though.

Scouting: 5 pitches but the only two that make teams suffer are his changeup and fastball, Needs a lot of work on the other three pitches if he wants to start in the CBO. Can also use work on his control to not walk too many batters. Projected to be a two-times-through-the-lineup starter. Will not be effective in late innings.

3rd Round, 9th pick - CF Precious Puppy, Bunker Hill

Puppy was consistent throughout his youth league career with Andrew Station, batting .317 with 43 career home runs and 24 career stolen bases. Very coachable and was probably picked wau behind his potential.

Scouting: Expected to be a good contact hitter but can show power, too. Will want to reduce his strikeouts, but he can advance bases when he is on. Good defensively because of range but sometimes misplays line drives and grounders. Should be a CF but may need to move to a corner OF position if he makes too many mistakes.

Round 4, 19th Pick - 1B Pauwoo Leopardskin, University Point

Joins the same franchise that already has the best 1B in Barker Cocoa, but could emulate that playing style with the Deathclaws. Improved every season with Concord-Lexington, including hitting 26 home runs in 2306.

Scouting: Lacks the body to ever be a top-hitting 1B but could generate .250/20/70 type numbers. Probably more aligned to batting 6th or 7th. Lacks speed and not anything to write home about as a 1B. May need a lot of time to develop at another positon since 5'11" is too short for the CBO.

5th Round, 3rd Pick - C Queue Bear, Lexington

Considered to have 1st round talent as a catcher but fell to the 5th round despite hitting over .300 in his youth career at Castle. Coachable and able to process complicated requests without a hitch.

Scouting: Potential to be a top-hitting catcher in the CBO, especially if his power game progresses. It would make him similar to players like two other Institute League catchers, Sunshine Tiding's Red Sone and Fort Hagen's Sleve McDichael. Needs to upgrade defense to be an everyday catcher.

Round 6, Pick 22 - CF Jamell Pup, Sunshine Tidings

Projected to be a 1st or 2nd rounder but fell a lot in the actual draft by going 142nd overall to the Chemists. Had great hitting in the youth league with Woburn. Only played three years with the Diners but felt ready.

Scouting: Strength is in his bat. Will not play CF in the bigs because of his lack of range at that level. Could progress into a .300+ hitter in the CBO, and could develop power more. Overall good eye that helps him avoid strikeouts.

Round 7, Pick 23 - LF Alvin Treeshadow, Vault 81

Came on in his final season with West Dennis to show that he was draftable. Coaches raved about his work ethic and how he would do what it takes to make it on the field. Rewarded coaches' patience by hitting .316/21/66 his senior season.

Scouting: Showed a lot of improvement in pitch recognition, allowing him to drive the ball. Could be much better if he continues to progress. Will need a good hitting coach to develop into a CBO hitter. Also developing in his fielding but has shown the ability to snag difficult hits. Could be a steal.

Round 8, Pick 21 - CF Sandy Shaw, Easy Town

Liked by others but does not stand out in a crowd. A bit on the light side and not as fast as he should be as a CF, so will move to a corner OF spot in the minors.

Scouting: Overall a good all-around hitter but does not flash greatness, making him likely to be a 5th-rounder at best. Could develop hitting in the pros to become a hitter around .300. Could also develop into a power hitter but relies on most of his home runs barely clearing the fence. Will need to add mass. Not a reliable defender, which he will need to work on in rookie ball.

Round 9, Pick 11 - 3B Tuck Wilson, Fort Hagen

Lots of raw potential but seemed to regress in time with Thompson Heights, down from a high of .374/25/64 in 2304 to just .325/16/46 in 2306. Silver Shroud will need to turn that around.

Scouting: Great power potential could see him hitting 30+ homers in time. Drafted as a 3B but could play either corner IF spot well, which could earn him a spot in the majors in time. May be a long-term project needing a series of steady improvements. Surprisingly speedy for such a tall boy.

Round 10, Pick 6 - 1B Cory Perryman, Nahant

Interesting prospect who played only one season in youth league ball with Woodlawn. Did not play much but did bat .289 with 6 home runs and 24 RBI.

Scouting: Raw but with lots of power potential. Built for strength. Had a surprising amount of patience at the plate when scouted, watching bad pitches and hammering at good ones. Decent with the glove but slow enough and without an accurate arm, so he is probably 1B or bust.

Rounds 11-15, Round 14, 315th Overall - C Brave John Quest, Lexington

Another of those catchers who was expected to go way higher than he did. Showed lots of improvement in his senior season with South Charles Bank. Could develop into one of the CBO's better hitting catchers.

Scouting: Has a good spread of hitting zones and hit locations. Will surprise RFers edging too far toward CF. Potential increases in power and already decent at drawing high pitch count walks. Improved on defense his last season but still needs to progress to be a CBO catcher.

Undrafted - RF Clock Wilmsmeyer, Wellesley

Injury concerns took a 1st round talent and made him undrafted. Should catch on to a team that will give him the ability to develop over a long-term period.

Scouting: Could be an elite power hitter, with 50+ homer potential, even if we never saw that in the BYDL. Needs to get on the field more but can be imposing. Would be a Top 5 pick if he did play fully. Always seems to be banged up which also makes teams question his commitment. Won't play with a blister on his little toe. May need to clear his head to find success. Would sign if I were a CBO GM.

NCA Hitter - County Crossing's Babs Rooth put the wraps on a fine campaign today by winning the 2306 North Charles Association Nuka-Hitter Award.

The 27-year-old veteran scorched the opposition with a .348 average, picking up 167 hits, 23 doubles, no triples, 53 home runs and 125 RBIs, while scoring 115 runs.

He received 24 first place votes, as a unanimous winner. Lannie Tykeson of the Easy Town Assaultrons finished second in voting, while Oren Gep of the Starlight Killers finished third.

SCA Hitter - What a way to finish off the year -- being honored with the 2306 Nuka-Hitter Award in the South Charles Association. It had already been a very special season for University Point's Barker Cocoa, but today's announcement really put the icing on his cake.

All season long Barker Cocoa gave opposing pitchers fits by hitting .401 as he collected 167 hits, 26 doubles, 2 triples, 45 home runs and 128 RBIs.

The 28-year-old hurler finished the year 16-8 for the Nordhagen Beach Party Boys, piling up 217 innings, registering 159 strikeouts and walking 58 on his way to a solid 3.15 ERA.

He received 24 first place votes, as a unanimous winner. Alex Alexson of the Starlight Killers finished second in voting, while Digger Vadim of the Starlight Killers finished third.

SCA Pitcher - The Vault 81 Dwellers have a rising superstar or maybe even a budding Hall-of-Famer in the making. It's Exxie Summerset, this year's South Charles Association Vim! Pitcher Award selection. This blossoming hurler wowed fans, peers and sportswriters with a fabulous performance.

Summerset compiled a 22-1 record in 30 starts, tallied 159 strikeouts in 239 innings and recorded a 2.15 ERA. Other clubs managed only a .204 batting average against him.

He received 24 first place votes, as a unanimous winner. Nuke Laloosh of the Roxbury Rad Sox finished second in voting, while Ronnie Messenger of the Oberland T-51s finished third.

NCA Manager - Manager Crow Guai was speaking before a County Crossing fan luncheon when word came down that he'd been awarded the North Charles Association Manager of the Year. Guai's face turned to surprise as the club's owner made the hasty announcement.

"Wow... how lucky can a guy be? Manage a great bunch of guys... have great fans... have a great season... and now this... life don't get any better than this."

County Crossing fans applauded, recognizing how fortunate they were to have Guai at the helm. Both fans and players in attendance toasted their skipper as they truly enjoyed the day.

2306 was an extra-special season for Guai as he piloted the County Crossing Bloodbugs to a 78-42 record and a first place spot in the North Charles Association Brotherhood League standings. A record good enough to win the 2306 Manager of the Year Award.

SCA Manager - Vault 81 manager Dan Ferreri caused quite a stir when he came to town. Noted for his feisty, no-nonsense attitude, Ferreri threw his all into the 2306 campaign, winning over critics and fans as he went. He also won a few ballgames, running up a 77-43 record, which was good enough to take the first place spot in the South Charles Association Railroad League standings.

"These guys are grown men. They don't need psychobabble, they need to win ballgames," Ferreri snapped at his first press conference. While his approach was controversial, even for Vault 81, it netted the 45-year-old the South Charles Association Manager of the Year trophy. In response to which he replied, "It ain't molecular physics, it's baseball," and began discussing potential free agents with the local media.

NCA Rookie - The North Charles Association has made it official -- Birdie Burdi is the winner of the Red Rocket Rookie Award.

In 2306 the Fort Hagen left fielder was solid performer with a .279 batting average, 20 home runs and 69 RBIs. Burdi also had 71 walks and posted a .377 on-base percentage.

He received 24 first place votes, as a unanimous winner. Shirt Fowler of the Lexington Synths finished second in voting, while Needham Tickler of the Salem Witch Hats finished third.

The Sunshine Tidings Chemists closer was the owner of a 2.65 ERA this season over 68 innings of work. He made 59 relief appearances and had 40 saves, 50 strikeouts, 29 walks and a record of 4 wins and 4 losses.


He's also now got some hardware, as the 30-year-old has been named the North Charles Association Fallon's Reliever Award winner.

"It's something I can tell my grandchildren some day, pretty special," he said.

The 27-year-old out of Plymouth, Massachusetts captured the award with 1 save in 52 relief appearances, 62 strikeouts in 81.2 innings and a record of 4 wins and 1 loss to go with his 2.20 ERA.

"I'm thankful, it's a great honor," he told Baseball News Network.
