Trade Deadline thoughts
This team needs to likely make some big decisions about a number of key players in the near future. With many older players on long contracts, Castonguay will have to decide who will be worth investing in, and how to clear up cap space for a contending team in the future.
Pending free agents
Adam Ruzicka
A strong 3rd line centre, Adam Ruzicka has shown that he is more than capable of performing at an NHL level. The Flames organisation has offered him a 3 year 1.1 mil AAV extension.
Elias Lindholm
Having another very strong season for the Flames, moving Lindholm would likely mean giving up the slim chance of playoffs this year. However wanting a 6 year 7.6M deal with a no-movement clause, Castonguay has her reservations about offering an NMC to a player who will likely be regressing by the time this team is a true contender.
Noah Hanifin
A solid defensive option on the first pairing, Hanifin has been another core piece of the Flames this season. At only 27, and wanting around 4 year, 6.7 mil AAV contract, the current plan is to discuss an extension.
Jeremie Poirier
A young defenseman with high potential Poirier and the Flames are finalising talks on a 3 year 1.1mil AAV contract.
Ben Jones
Another young centre coming through the system, Ben Jones will be likely extended at around 2 years, 1.5 AAV.
Other
Nazem Kadri
Continuing a slow decline as he ages, Nazem Kadri's 6 years at 7 mil AAV remaining will likely become an issue for Calgary in the future. While not being listed as a "must trade", the Flames are open to conversations.
Andrew Mangiapane
With his contract expiring after the 24/25 season, Mangiapane will be one of the first priorities of the front office in the offseason. As a very popular player in Calgary, the goal is to keep him long term, though if there are issues with contract negotiations, Castonguay could be talked into a package.
While also big contracts, Huberdeau and Weegar will likely remain with Calgary for the next 3-4 years, unless they show significant regression, or Calgary finds themselves with cap issues.
