1903 World Series: Philadelphia Athletics vs. Brooklyn Superbas
Game 1, October 2nd, 1903, Columbia Park
Superbas Edge Athletics 2-1 to Open WS
The rookie looked like he belonged out there.
The Brooklyn Superbas sent 21-year-old right-hander Red Ames to the mound today for a high-pressure playoff start and he repaid their confidence, quieting the Philadelphia Athletics on a day where the Superbas struggled to produce runs of their own. In the end, Brooklyn cobbled together enough to take the 2-1 decision. The win gave Brooklyn a 1-0 lead in the best-of-9 World Series.
Though he didn't earn the victory, Ames kept his team in the game until the bullpen took over and the Brooklyn offense came through. Over 6.2 innings, he allowed 4 hits and 1 run, while striking out 9.
"It was a good day but I'm not letting my guard down," Ames said. "I'll let my guard down as soon as someone puts a big, fat championship ring on my finger."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Columbia Park in Philadelphia.
