The Old Guard and the Youth Movement - Vancouver announces flurry of extensions prior to trade deadline

February 23rd, 2018 -
The Canucks announced that both Sedin twins were re-signed to one year deals at a hometown discount. Sedins have seen their production drop off quite a bit the past few seasons but are having a resurgent season (well, Daniel WAS until his concussion anyways) but have both taken less than $4 Million on one year extensions with No Movement Clauses. Chris Tanev was also extended, getting 5 years at an AAV of $3.42 Million. Tanev has played at least 21 minutes a night for the past three seasons for Vancouver while defending against the league's top offensive threats and as the league leader in shot blocks and a premium defensive defenseman he could certainly have garnered a much bigger raise on the open market. It's a tidy piece of business for Linden and crew to bring all three veterans back at a bargain.

Vancouver also announced a lot of their younger players received extensions. Most notably Jared McCann signed for six seasons at $1.32 Million per. Rasmus Andersson and Evgeny Svechnikov, both playing with the big club this year, received extensions. Minor leaguers Dominik Kahun, Alex Iafallo, Filip Chlapik and Alex Friesen also re-signed with the club.
