July 3-5, 2054: at Boston (3)
Game 1: The Rays managed to turn a 2-1 lead in the 7th over Boston at Fenway into a 9-2 loss as Chris Parham (3) and Chris Hetzel (5) managed to combine to allow 8 runs in the 7th and 8th innings. Parham (3-1) wasn't helped by a Nesty de la Rosa error which made 2 of the 3 runs unearned but he also gave up 5 hits in 2/3 of an inning. Dantel Chinchilla's 2-run double had just put the Rays ahead in the top of the 7th before things went bad, costing Brad Villarreal a win after an excellent 6 5 1 1 1 7 start.
Game 2: Jose Lozada capped a 3-hit day with a 9th-inning 2-run double to break a 3-3 tie and the Rays took a 5-3 decision over the Red Sox. Ezequiel Avalos' 2-run double gave them an early 3-1 lead which Tim Johnson couldn't hold due to giving up HRs #19 & 20 of the season although he did limit the damage at 6 4 3 3 4 7. Mario Berumen (1-2) picked up the win and Edgar Voisin earned save #15.
Game 3: The Rays took the series with a 10-4 rout of the Sox in the finale, scoring 5 times in the 8th to break open a game they led 4-2. The Avaloses led the way with Jesus blasting a 3-run homer (#22) among his 3 hits and Ezequiel doubling twice and homering (#19) wth 2 RBI while Dantel Chinchilla added a couple of RBI hits. Dave Rose (9-4) was in fine form at 7 4 2 2 1 9 for the win.
Team record: 48-37. Still 9 behind the Yanks but now 2 games up on the third team atop the wild card race. Next up: We head south on I-95 to play 3 in Baltimore.
