June 29-July 1, 2054: vs Texas (3)
Game 1: The Rays took a 5-1 win over Texas to open their series behind a likely source (Dave Rose) and an unlikely one (B.J. Boys). Rose improved to 8-4 behind a tidy 6 4 1 1 2 4 and with some regulars in need of rest Boys got into the lineup and was 3-5 with 3 RBI off an RBI double and 2-run single.
Game 2: Tampa Bay got the better of Texas by the same 5-1 score as yesterday with a solid outing from Randy Mastropietro (8-5) who went 5.1 3 1 1 1 4 and a big 2-run homer from Alex Brown (#5) while Nesty de la Rosa was 2-4 with an RBI double.
Game 3: The Rays completed the sweep of Texas, taking an 8-5 win in the finale. Luis Barela snapped out of a long slump and went 2-4 with a solo homer (#13) and RBI single, Sung-min Yang got them on the board with a 2-run double in the first, and Cameron Holly was 2-4 with 2 RBI including a run-scoring triple. Ben Hilton (6-3) was unhittable at times but very hittable at others yet still got the win despite going 5.2 5 5 5 2 9, and Edgar Voisin closed it out for save #14.
Team record: 46-36. The sweep did enable the Rays to get the Yankees' division lead back to single digits at 9 and put them atop the wild card race although three teams are within 1 1/2 games of them. Next up: A day off and then off to Boston for 3 games.
