You'll get retirement messages if your team is the last one they had some association with, even if it was years ago and they had a long period of inactivity prior to retirement. Things like training camp invitations, being drafted, etc., will be considered, too, so if you invite someone to camp, don't sign him, and he doesn't sign anywhere and a year later retires, you'll get that message.
If you're getting them for players that have had absolutely no connection to your team, please give me some examples and we can check if there's something going wrong there,
