We jumped on Tim Leary early, after a Jeff Cox infield single, Fred Lynn smashed one off the left wall, too hard to score Cox, but Amstead did his job, grounding to short to knock in Cox. Roy Howell following with a gapper to score Lynn, and it was 2-0 before the Braves could see a pitch. When they did, they loaded them up with 1 out in the first, but Clark Ullom got John Castino to fly out to shallow right and Ron Roenicke to ground harmlessly to third to end the threat.
Gary Redus led off the 3rd with a walk and on a 2-2 pitch, Garry Maddox hit a home run to left center that just cleared the wall to tie things up at 2. Redus came up again with 2 outs and runner on in the 4th and took it deep to left and the Braves went up 4-2.
I decided to let Ullom hit in the 5th and he struck out, but Lennie May followed with a double and Jeff Cox hit a liner that just cleared the left field wall and just like that, we are tied at 4.
Ullom didn't have it, he promptly loaded the bases with 1 out in the 5th and on came Steve Busby to face the bottom 3rd of the order. Mike Brown slashed a single to right to score 2 and it's 6-4 Atlanta. After a double steal, intentional walk and strikeout, Busby walked Redus with the bases loaded and it was 7-4 Braves after 5.
The 6th and 7th were scoreless and the Braves brought in closer Dennis Lamp to start the 8th where leadoff man Nay blooped one to center to lead it off. With 2 outs, Armstead smacked a double to left to cut the lead to 7-5. Howell also lined a double to the gap in left and just like that, it was 7-6 with Dan Briggs coming up with the tying run at 2nd. We pinch ran Rodney Scott (80) for Howell (25) even though there were 2 outs in case of a single. But Briggs grounded to short to end that threat.
After the Braves went out harmlessly in the 8th, we went down harmlessly in the 9th with a Ted May fly out, Charles Stafford strikeout and Bombo Rivera fly out and the Braves took game 1 in Atlanta, 7-6
