I was watching a game that took place in the late 70s. Billy Kilmer was the QB for the Redskins. To avoid a sack, he threw a dart at his WRs feet. He was flagged for intentional grounding.

Yep, and back in those days guys like Kilmer, Griese, Stabler, Tarkenton... if they wanted to stop the clock, they couldn't just spike at their feet like they do now. They had to throw a dart out of bounds but in the direction of their wide receiver. Just one quick drop-back step, and then fire it over the head of the receiver, who basically wouldn't move from his spot on the line of scrimmage.
