1901 NEW ENGLAND LEAGUE
Teams:
Augusta
Bangor
Haverhill Hustlers
Lewiston
Lowell Tigers
Manchester
Nashua
Portland
Note: Above are the team names OOTP uses (well, will use once this league is included in OOTP). The league began the season with the teams listed above. Two clubs moved to new cities during the season, and then disbanded a week later:
On June 30th, due to the cost of travel to Maine, the league transferred Augusta to Lynn (Mass.), and transferred Bangor to Brockton (Mass.). Both clubs were disbanded a week later, on July 6th.
Schedule Characteristics:
<SCHEDULE type="ILN_BGY_G98_T8_C_" inter_league="0" balanced_games="1" games_per_team="98" start_month="5" start_day="15" start_on_weekday="4">
This schedule is primarily based upon the schedule printed in the 5/6/1901 edition of The Bangor Daily News.
Each team plays 98 games; 7 home games and 7 road games against each team (there are a couple of 6-&-8-game exceptions).
Teams play either single game or a two-game series'. Prior to the relocations/disbanding of the two clubs above, this schedule was problematic in that Augusta was about 150 miles from the 4 southern-most cities (Manchester, Nashua, Lowell, Haverhill) which were all within about 30 miles of one another, and Lowell was a whopping 230 miles away from those 4 southern-most cities. However, *after* the league contracted, only two teams remained outside of the 30-mile / 4-team conglomeration: Portland, which was about 80-100 miles from the southern teams, and Lewiston, which was around 115-130 miles away. (See the map here:
https://www.statscrew.com/minorbaseball/l-NENL/y-1901)
Season starts on May 15th and ends on Sept 7th (the actual schedule - which included numerous changes due to contraction - ended on Sept 2nd).
Games are played Mondays thru Saturdays. While teams occasionally have an off day or travel day, there are no league-wide off days. The exceptions are Sundays, upon which no baseball is allowed.
DOUBLEHEADERS
Doubleheaders for all teams on 5/30 for Decoration Day, 7/4 for Independence Day, and 9/2 for Labor Day. Some of these doubleheaders are home-and-home:
5/30 Lewiston (am) and Portland (pm)
5/30 Lowell (am) and Nashua (pm)
7/4 Haverhill (am) and Nashua (pm)
7/4 Manchester (am) and Lowell (pm)
In what was most-likely an error on the printed schedule, on July 4th it had Augusta playing a morning game at Lewiston and an afternoon game as Portland, and Bangor playing a morning game at Lewiston and and afternoon game at Portland. I *could* have changed this to where, for example, Augusta played two games at Lewiston and Bangor played two games at Portland. However, that would've thrown off the balanced nature of the overall schedule. And since this these inter-city doubleheaders sounded fun (and these 35-mile trips were certainly possible), I left those "as originally scheduled."
The only scheduled non-holiday doubleheader was Lowell at Augusta on May 24th.
Start Times:
Actual start times not known. I used the following start times:
Weekday games begin at noon
Saturday games begin at 2 pm
Regular (both games in one host city) doubleheaders start at 11 am and 3 pm
Home-and-home holiday doubleheaders start at either 10 and 3 pm or 11 am and 3pm, depending upon geography
The 5/24 Lowell at August doubleheader games start at 12:30 pm and 4 pm
The 7/4 "oddball" intercity doubleheaders mentioned above start at 10 am and 3 pm
The attached schedule is primarly based, as noted above, on the original published schedule. The only changes were to move two games that were essentially impossible and clearly published in error. In one instance, the error was easy to determine in that the actual date of the game was the day before (verified by newspaper results); so I moved the game to the correct date. In the other instance, it was after the league had contracted and major changes were made to the real schedule, so I was unable to determine what the correction should have been. Therefore, I simply moved the game to an open date for both teams (which works pretty well with this schedule since one-game "series" were common).
The attached schedule most definitely does not make any adjustments for the franchise relocations and foldings. It also does not factor in any games that were moved around due to rainouts & makeups, etc.
No postseason games were played.
