Definitely 'follow the team' for me. I've been to four MLB games in my life - one in 1976 in Cincinnati (where I became a Reds fan at a very young age) and three in 2009 in Toronto when the Reds paid a visit.
Having Joey Votto on the team all these years has simply been a bonus, not to mention having his mother tap me on the shoulder at one of the games because I was wearing my Votto jersey. ("I always get a kick out of seeing my name on the back of a jersey" was her response.
