Miami Hurricanes (10-9) @ Atlanta Kings (5-14)
Kings Split Series 2-2
Atlanta showing signs of life in series split.

Here's my take: The Miami Hurricanes and Atlanta Kings just wrapped up a four-game series that had fans on the edge of their seats. David Victorero pitched a gem for the 'Canes in Game 1, a 4-0 win, with Isidoro Fortichiari's 2-run homer stealing the show. But the Kings weren't down for long, as Luis Rosales and Mario Rodriguez led Atlanta to a 5-3 comeback in Game 2. Game 3's 11-3 Atlanta win had Rodriguez and Marcos Valverde's clutch hits driving the offense. Miami's Gil Aguilar and Dave Trujillo made sure to split the series with a 7-1 victory in Game 4. These Kings, struggling at 5-14, showed real signs of life against a Miami team now at 10-9. Don't write off Atlanta just yet – this series was a battle, and it's only April!

GAME 1 - Hurricanes Win, 4-0, Over Atlanta
Starting pitcher David Victorero was a major factor in the 4-0 Miami Hurricanes triumph over the Atlanta Kings. The winning pitcher was Victorero, now 2-0. He tossed 7.2 innings of 4-hit ball, while walking 3 and fanning 5. The win puts Miami at 9-7.

Isidoro Fortichiari, the 25-year old second baseman , had a direct impact on the outcome. Fortichiari contributed a 2-run home run in the top of the fourth inning to put Miami up, 2-0.

"We'll pop the top on a cold beverage and get back to work tomorrow," Fortichiari said.

GAME 2 - Hurricanes Tagged with 5-3 Loss
Luis Rosales led Atlanta to a win over Miami. The final score was 5-3. Rosales scored 2 times, while going 3 for 5. The second baseman also was credited with 1 run batted in. The Kings, with only their 4th win in 17 games, have not had much to write home about in 1981.

Atlanta designated hitter Mario Rodriguez contributed a timely at-bat in the bottom of the first. With two down, he hit a fastball into right field for a 2-run single. It was his 3rd hit of the season and put the Kings ahead, 2-0.

Rodriguez said his team "played with focus."

GAME 3 - Kings Deck Hurricanes, 11-3
Behind a solid performance from designated hitter Mario Rodriguez, the Atlanta Kings defeated the Miami Hurricanes, 11-3. Rodriguez was 2-3 with a double, a walk, and was hit by a pitch. He drove in 3 runs and scored once for the Kings. Mike Anderson, now 1-0, was credited with the win. He allowed no runs on 2 hits, while striking out 3 and walking 2. The Kings, with just their 5th win so far in 1981, have yet to catch fire.

Atlanta took a 4-3 lead on Marcos Valverde's 4th double of the season. The 2-run double, which Valverde hit in the bottom of the seventh, left Miami pitcher Chris Stella shaking his head.

Rodriguez told a local reporter: "My job is to go out and play as hard as I can."

GAME 4 - Miami Gets 7-1 Win
Miami turned a good effort from starter Gil Aguilar into a win over the Atlanta Kings at Kings Field. The final score was 7-1. Aguilar got the win, improving to 3-2. He allowed 6 hits and walked 2 over 8 innings. Aguilar allowed 1 run. Atlanta, now 5-14, continues its tough start.

Who knows how it might've ended, had it not been for Dave Trujillo? The Miami shortstop had a 2-run double in the top of the fifth inning to put the Hurricanes on top, 3-1. For the game, Trujillo had 1 double and 2 singles in 4 at-bats.

"If we play like this, we can win a lot of games," Aguilar told the Miami Today.

Charlotte Colonels (13-6) @ Tampa Bay Storm (7-12)
Colonels Win Series 3-1
Charlotte continues dominance vs NBC East.

Here's my take: The Charlotte Colonels took down the Tampa Bay Storm 3-1 in a series that showcased their National Conference dominance. With key performances by Alex Gonzales and Dabir Aly, the Colonels marched to a sizzling 13-6 start. Tampa Bay's Nick Olesen snagged a win, but the Storm's 7-12 record leaves much to be desired. Charlotte's playing with confidence, and the rest of the conference should be on notice. The Colonels are marching!

GAME 1 - Charlotte Gets 6-4 Win
The Charlotte Colonels overcame a good performance by Tampa Bay first baseman Francisco Lizarraga to knock off Tampa Bay, 6-4, at Storm Stadium. Lizarraga was 2 for 3 with a home run and a walk. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. Bill Mendoza picked up the save for Charlotte, his 2nd of the year. The Storm are now 6-10.

Alex Gonzales, the 26-year old second baseman , had a direct impact on the outcome. Gonzales contributed a 2-run single in the top of the fourth inning to put Charlotte up, 5-1.

"One win at a time, one game at a time. We try not to get too far ahead of ourselves," Gonzales told the Charlotte Today.

GAME 2 - Olesen Finds Groove in 6-1 Triumph
The Tampa Bay Storm topped the Charlotte Colonels, 6-1, in National Baseball Conference action at Storm Stadium. The game was highlighted by the performance of Tampa Bay pitcher Nick Olesen. Tampa Bay goes to 7-10.

Olesen allowed 1 run over 9 innings. He also racked up 6 strikeouts.

"We'll kick back tonight and enjoy this win," said Olesen.

GAME 3 - Colonels Edge Past Storm, 4-3
The Charlotte Colonels downed the Tampa Bay Storm, 4-3. The hitting star was designated hitter Michael Dickens. Dickens was 2 for 4 with a home run, a double, and a walk, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once for the Colonels. Charlotte reliever Edwin Martinez picked up the win to move to 2-1. Luis Carrera suffered the loss. Charlotte is off to a hot start at 12-6.

Charlotte used the clutch hitting of David Reeder to capture the win. The catcher drilled a run-scoring double in the top of the tenth inning to give the Colonels the lead, 4-3. For the game, Reeder had 1 single and 1 double in 5 at-bats.

"Sometimes winning takes more than 27 outs," said Colonels manager Jason Wainwright.

GAME 4 - Charlotte Wins, 5-1
Charlotte and Tampa Bay got after it at Storm Stadium.

Dabir Aly pitched a gem to lead Charlotte to victory over the Tampa Bay Storm, 5-1. Edwin Martinez earned the save, his 5th.

Charlotte used the clutch hitting of Dustin Meredith to capture the win. The left fielder drilled a run-scoring double in the top of the sixth inning to give the Colonels the lead, 1-0. For the game, Meredith had 2 singles and 1 double in 4 at-bats.

"We've got a great group of guys," Meredith said, "and we're having fun right now."

The Storm, now 7-12, continue their poor start.

Detroit Dukes (12-7) @ Chicago Fire (10-9)
Fire Wins Series 3-1
Chicago cools off red-hot Dukes in four game series win.

Here's my take: The Chicago Fire came out blazing in a 3-1 series triumph over the Detroit Dukes, heating up the National Baseball Conference race. Game 1's 16-8 thrashing saw Sal Gamez and Mel Montelongo light up the scoreboard, while Edgar Gonzalez's pitching mastery in Game 2 continued to stoke the Fire's winning ways. Detroit's Armando Garcia fueled a Game 3 victory, but it was Chicago's Miguel Morales and Heriberto Jimenez who rekindled the Fire's charge in an 8-3 Game 4 win. With a 10-9 record, Chicago's on fire, and they're not cooling down anytime soon!

GAME 1 - With 16-8 Win, Fire Improve to 8-8
The Chicago Fire saddled the Detroit Dukes with a loss at Chicago Grounds. The final score was 16-8. Sal Gamez was 2 for 4, including 1 single and 1 home run. The Chicago first baseman scored 3 runs and drove in 2. The win gives Chicago a record of 8-8.

The Fire got an important contribution from designated hitter Mel Montelongo, who in the bottom of the fourth punched a full count changeup into right-center for a bases-clearing double. It was his 1st double of the season and put the Fire ahead, 13-0.

"It was a nice win for our side today," said Fire manager Matt Mead. "Not perfect, but we'll take it."

GAME 2 - Gonzalez Now 3-1 After Subduing Dukes
The Chicago Fire topped the Detroit Dukes, 2-1, in National Baseball Conference action at Chicago Grounds. The standout performance belonged to Chicago pitcher and Bothell, Washington, native Edgar Gonzalez. Oscar Roa closed it out for his 3rd save. Detroit falls to 11-6.

Gonzalez, the winner, is now 3-1. In 8 innings of work, he gave up 1 run on 4 hits, while collecting 9 Ks. He essentially shut down the Detroit offense.

"One win at a time, one game at a time. We try not to get too far ahead of ourselves," Gonzalez told the Chicago Today.

GAME 3 - Dukes Down Fire, 13-9
The Detroit Dukes overcame a fine performance by Chicago center fielder Miguel Morales to defeat the Fire, 13-9, at Chicago Grounds. Morales was 4-5 with 3 doubles and was hit by a pitch, while scoring 3 times. The winner in relief was Jordan Allison. He is now 2-1. The right-hander allowed 3 runs on 5 hits in 2.2 innings. The win has Detroit at 12-6.

Detroit relied on the hitting of Armando Garcia to pick up the win. The second baseman clubbed a run-scoring single in the top of the 11th inning to put the Dukes on top, 7-6. For the game, Garcia had 1 home run and 1 single in 2 at-bats.

"It's a satisfying feeling, to win like we did," said Garcia.

GAME 4 - Fire Roll to 8-3 Win Over Dukes
Chicago left-hander Heriberto Jimenez pitched his team to victory over the Detroit Dukes at Chicago Grounds. The final score was 8-3. The win gives Chicago a record of 10-9.

The Fire got an important contribution from center fielder Miguel Morales, who in the bottom of the third punched a full count cutter into right-center for a 3-run home run. It was his 4th home run of the season and put the Fire ahead, 5-0.

"Enjoyed this one," Jimenez told the Chicago Today. "But it's back to work tomorrow."

Dallas Rustlers (12-7) @ Minneapolis Blizzard (8-11)
Blizzard Wins Series 3-1
Minneapolis secures four-game series win by battling streaking Dallas in Game 4 nail-biter.

Here's my take: The Minneapolis Blizzard stormed through the Dallas Rustlers in a thrilling 3-1 series win, creating a significant stir in the division. In Game 1, Tristan Davis's masterful pitching, along with Edwin Rivera's key 2-run home run, paved the way for a 2-1 win. Dallas rallied in Game 2 with an 8-7 victory, despite Ricky Thompson's remarkable 5-for-5 day for Minneapolis. Game 3 was a Blizzard showcase, as Jorge Ortiz's timely triple secured a 10-8 win. In a nail-biting Game 4, Lee Byron's clutch hitting guided Minneapolis to a 7-6 edge over Dallas. As the Blizzard look to climb the division rankings, this series win could be the spark they need, while the Rustlers will need to regroup and find their footing again in the division race.

GAME 1 - Rustlers Dealt 2-1 Loss by Minneapolis
In a low-scoring tilt between the Minneapolis Blizzard and the Dallas Rustlers, Tristan Davis was the difference-maker. The Minneapolis right-hander spearheaded the 2-1 win. Davis got the win, improving to 1-1. He allowed 8 hits and walked 2 over 8 innings. Davis allowed 1 run. Dallas falls to 11-5.

The Blizzard got a big at-bat from right fielder Edwin Rivera. For the game, Rivera went 1 for 3 with a home run. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. In the bottom of the fourth, with a runner on 1st, he stroked a 2-run home run. His 2nd home run of the season gave Minneapolis a 2-1 lead.

"We'll kick back tonight, then get set for the next one," Rivera said.

GAME 2 - 5-for-5 Day for Thompson
Ricky Thompson found his groove in today's game versus the Dallas Rustlers and wrote his name in the league record book. His 5-for-5 performance at the plate unfortunately wasn't enough for the Minneapolis Blizzard, as the club lost the game, 8-7.

The 26-year-old second baseman told the press "it was one of those days where everything clicked."

"I made solid contact, and the ball dropped in," Thompson said.

Ricky Thompson hit an RBI double in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, singled in the 7th and hit an RBI single in the 8th.

In the 1981 season Thompson is hitting .500 with no home runs.

GAME 3 - Blizzard Stun Rustlers, 10-8
The Dallas Rustlers got a superb performance from designated hitter Mike Frierson. Still, it wasn't enough to beat Minneapolis. The Blizzard won the game, 10-8. Frierson went 3 for 4 with a home run and a double, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 3. Reliever Chris Jenkins picked up the win. His record improves to 1-1. Jonathan Guzman took the loss. Minneapolis, now 7-11, is off to a slow start.

Had Jorge Ortiz not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and a runner on 2nd, Ortiz hit a run-scoring triple. That made the score 9-8, in favor of the Blizzard.

"Hustle and hard work is a big part of our success," said Ortiz. "Those qualities define our team."

GAME 4 - Blizzard Edge Rustlers, 7-6
In the 7-6 Minneapolis win over Dallas, the impact of Lee Byron was substantial. Byron went 3 for 4 with 3 singles. Arturo Garcia finished the game for Minneapolis and earned his 4th save. The win moves Minneapolis to a record of 8-11.

The game turned with one out in the bottom of the seventh when Byron hit a run-scoring single. It propelled the Blizzard into the lead, 6-5.

"Another day, another win. On to the next one," Byron told the Minneapolis Daily.

San Diego Seraphs (6-13) @ Los Angeles Cobras (12-7)
Cobras Split Series 2-2
Two division foes battle to a draw as San Diego shows their mettle.

Here's my take: In a dogfight out West, the Los Angeles Cobras and San Diego Seraphs battled to a 2-2 series split, each game a scuffle in its own right. Orlando Greeley's bat was a blazing beacon for the Cobras, but it was the Seraphs' grit, epitomized by Elijah Griffith's ninth-inning heroics, that stole the spotlight. Ramon Reyes's walk-off win in Game 4? Pure drama. This series wasn't just a game of baseball; it was a statement. The Cobras might've been the favorites, but never underestimate the bite of the underdog Seraphs. In the NBC West, no lead is safe, and no win is given.

GAME 1 - Seraphs Nip Cobras, 6-5
Los Angeles got a terrific game from third baseman Orlando Greeley. It wasn't enough, though, to prevent the team from falling to San Diego, 6-5. Greeley was 3 for 4 with a home run, 2 singles, and a walk. He drove in 3 runs and scored once. The Seraphs, now 5-11, have not found much traction so far in 1981.

San Diego used the clutch hitting of Elijah Griffith to capture the win. The designated hitter drilled a run-scoring double in the top of the ninth inning to give the Seraphs the lead, 6-5. For the game, Griffith had 2 singles and 1 double in 5 at-bats.

"It wasn't our best performance," said Griffith, "but a win in this league is nothing to sniff at."

GAME 2 - Greeley Powers Cobras to 8-1 Win
Behind a fine performance from Orlando Greeley, the Los Angeles Cobras knocked off the San Diego Seraphs, 8-1. Greeley went 3 for 4 with a home run and a double. He scored 2 times and drove in 3 for the Cobras. Enrique Laxton got credit for the win, improving to 3-1. He allowed 1 run on 5 hits in 7 innings. At 11-6, the Cobras have played well so far.

Los Angeles took a 3-1 lead on Greeley's 5th home run of the season. The solo home run, which he hit off Jose Segura in the bottom of the sixth, propelled Los Angeles to the win.

"Things went our way," said Greeley.

GAME 3 - Seraphs Win at Los Angeles, 6-3
Myles Byrd had a good game, but he could not keep the Los Angeles Cobras from falling, 6-3, to the San Diego Seraphs at Cobras Ballpark. The Los Angeles center fielder was 3 for 4 with a home run and 2 singles. He drove in 3 runs and scored once in the loss. Robbie Kendall, the winner, goes to 3-1. He allowed 3 runs on 7 hits, with 1 walk and 3 strikeouts over 9 innings. The loss has the Cobras at 11-7.

San Diego relied on the hitting of Leonardo Gonzalez to pick up the win. The right fielder clubbed a solo home run in the top of the fifth inning to put the Seraphs on top, 1-0. For the game, Gonzalez had 1 home run and 1 single in 3 at-bats.

"We'll pop the top on a cold beverage and get back to work tomorrow," Gonzalez said.

GAME 4 - Los Angeles Gets Riveting Walk-Off Win
The Los Angeles Cobras picked up a win at Cobras Ballpark, taking down the San Diego Seraphs, 5-4. Starting pitcher Jerry Romero was a big reason why. For the Seraphs, the loss makes their record 6-13.

The game was decided with one out in the bottom of the ninth. With Los Angeles trailing 4-3, Ramon Reyes hit a fastball from Victor Hernandez to right for a 2-run single. Just like that, the Cobras had a walk-off win.

"This game had its share of tense moments," Reyes said, postgame.

Phoenix Firebirds (8-11) @ San Francisco Warriors (11-8)
Warriors Split Series 2-2
Phoenix continues to underachieve as they settle for a series split.

Here's my take: The NBC West witnessed a thrilling series between the Phoenix Firebirds and the San Francisco Warriors, ending in a 2-2 draw that kept fans on the edge of their seats. Phoenix's catcher Sam Ashworth was a revelation, and Tony Calhoun's game-changing single in Game 1 set the tone. However, San Francisco's pitchers, especially Antonio Pineda and Ryan Harvey, who both pitched shutouts, kept the Warriors in the fight. Gary Schuckman's bat for Phoenix and Vinny Herrera's timely hitting made this series a perfect illustration of the division's fierce competitiveness. Don't sleep on either of these teams as the season heats up.

GAME 1 - Firebirds Topple Warriors, 12-5, as Ashworth Shines
The Phoenix Firebirds topped the San Francisco Warriors, 12-5, in National Baseball Conference action at San Francisco Grounds. The game was highlighted by the performance of Phoenix catcher Sam Ashworth. The win puts Phoenix at 7-9.

Phoenix used the timely hitting of Tony Calhoun to seize the win. The third baseman stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the eighth inning to put the Firebirds on top, 6-4. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.

"I'm just trying to make good contact," said Ashworth, "one at-bat at a time."

GAME 2 - Phoenix Comes up Empty Against Pineda
Antonio Pineda blitzed the Phoenix Firebirds at San Francisco Grounds today, pitching the San Francisco Warriors to victory, 5-0. Pineda needed 9 innings to shut out the Firebirds, striking out 7.

"I knew he had it in him, but it's still nice to see him put it all together," said San Francisco manager Tyler Trowbridge.

Pineda surrendered 6 hits and 1 walk in the outing.

GAME 3 - Phoenix Downs San Francisco, 8-4
Firebirds designated hitter Gary Schuckman put his stamp on his team's 8-4 win over the San Francisco Warriors. Schuckman went 3 for 5 with a home run and 2 singles. He scored 2 times and drove in 2 for Phoenix in the contest. The defeat makes San Francisco 10-8.

Phoenix used the timely hitting of Vinny Herrera to seize the win. The shortstop stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the seventh inning to put the Firebirds on top, 6-4. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.

"We put a lot of pressure on ourselves," Herrera told a Phoenix Bulletin reporter. "Sometimes we just need to relax."

GAME 4 - Firebirds Shut Out by Harvey, 3-0
In a standout performance today at San Francisco Grounds, Warriors pitcher Ryan Harvey blanked the Phoenix Firebirds 3-0. He limited them to 3 hits and posted 2 strikeouts and 1 walk to gain the win for San Francisco.
