I thought the same guy who sold Greenland to the Danish might have been in charge of marketing for these guys - my limited knowledge of the geography of Arkansas may have had something to do with that, as I didn't really know of any "seaports" in that region. Anyway, Helena is smack bang on the west bank of the Mississippi River, so what the heck do I know?
More now than when I started work on these guys, that's for sure, including:
- Helena played an integral part in the lives of both musician Conway Twitty and former Expos and Mets MLBer Ellis Valentine;
- In the 1930s, Helena was known as the "Blues Capital of the Delta" and regularly played host to some of the genre's biggest names;
- Helena is just 90 minutes' drive from Memphis, but I reckon the paddleboat ride would be a lot more fun.
With regard to the Seaporters, they descended from a club called the Hellions that played in the Arkansas State League in the late 1900s, themselves featuring in the Cotton States League from 1935 thru '49.
A learning day is a good day indeed. It's wet and miserable here in Sydney and my dodgy back is playing up, so you get a super special Saturday 2-for-1 deal included with your subscription.
