Do It For Pike
Philadelphia Crowns Whites As Champions

The Philadelphia Whites thrilled their fans and proved to why they are the most popular team in baseball as they easily defeated the Washington Nations in five games to earn their first championship. Their third trip to the series proved to be the charm.

All the emotion seemed to surround player/manager Lip Pike who after a brilliant career as both a player and a leader finally has a title. Pike and the Whites were so close losing the last two seasons but this time around, the players were not going to let their manager down.

Pike hit just .263 in the series but his pitchers lead by Tommy Bond did a phenomenal job on Washington hitting holding both Ross Barnes and batting champion Deacon White to a combined .200 average and 8 hits in the series. Philly was also picked up by some great hitting as Jimmy earned some recognition as the MVP of the series as he had 11 hits in 22 times at bat and drove in three runs in the five games.

Cy Bentley closed out the clinching game in his only start defeating the great Bobby Mathews in game five. The Nationals fail to become the first team to win two championships in a row but surely also have a respect for the Whites and especially Lip Pike who has been a stalwart in the game.

Phlly fans all chanted "we did it for Pike" as the calling cry carried across town as celebrations seemed to go on for days. Good things seem to surely come to those who wait.
