Atlanta Kings (3-12) @ Charlotte Colonels (10-5)
Colonels Win Series 2-1
Charlotte takes rubber game with walk-off grand-slam.
GAME 1 - Colonels Turn Back Atlanta, 3-1
The Charlotte Colonels got a magnificent performance from pitcher Roberto Umana, who muffled the Atlanta offense en route to a tight 3-1 Colonels win at Colonels Park. Umana, the winner, moves to 3-0. He threw 8 innings of 2-hit ball while fanning 2 and giving up 4 walks. The loss puts Atlanta at 2-11.
A critical at-bat came in the bottom of the seventh inning when the Colonels sent 22-year-old right fielder Miguel Salazar to the plate with the bases loaded. The youngster shook off the pressure and drew a walk, driving in 1 run, to put Charlotte on top, 3-1.
"We'll put that win in the can," said Salazar, "and go after the next one."
GAME 2 - Ybanez Now 2-2 After Subduing Colonels
Atlanta Kings starter Bill Ybanez pitched a strong game against the Charlotte Colonels at Colonels Park, leading the Kings to victory, 1-0. Atlanta is off to a sluggish start, getting just their 3rd win in 14 games.
Ybanez gave Atlanta a solid start. The right-hander allowed no runs on 4 hits over 8 innings.
"That's baseball," said Charlotte manager Jason Wainwright. "Sometimes the other team plays better than yours."
GAME 3 - Charlotte Gets Riveting Walk-Off Win
Charlotte Colonels starter Jose Hernandez was in a groove as he led his team to a win over the Atlanta Kings, 8-5. Charlotte goes to 10-5.
The game ended with a bang. In the bottom of the ninth, with Charlotte trailing 5-4, Cody Larkin jumped on a 1-1 cutter from Mason Chaisson for a grand slam home run, sending the Colonels to a walk-off win.
"Nice to see our side come away with the win," Hernandez said after the game.
As a result of his tirade and temper tantrum in the first inning during yesterday's Colonels-Kings game at Colonels Park, Charlotte center fielder Santiago Castro will get some time off. He was issued a 4-game suspension by the league commissioner. Castro was suspended for verbally abusing and physically bumping the home plate umpire after being ejected for arguing over a third strike.
So far this year Castro is batting .214 with 2 home runs, 6 RBIs, and 9 runs scored.
As was shown in last week's NBC Featured Game the Colonels are going to miss his defense!
