GAME 1 - King Delivers Walk-Off Win for Dukes
Detroit second baseman Luis Rios was a significant contributor to his team's 6-5 triumph over the Charlotte Colonels. He was 2-4 with a home run and a triple. He drove in 4 runs and scored once for Detroit. Charlotte drops to 6-4.
Tony King was the walk-off hero for Detroit. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Dukes' center fielder hit a dramatic run-scoring single to send the teams home.
"I like our mindset right now," said Detroit manager Jose Perez.
GAME 2 - Extra-Inning Win by Colonels Over Dukes
Charlotte center fielder Santiago Castro had a 4-RBI game, which helped his team beat the Detroit Dukes, 8-5. The win was credited to Bill Mendoza in relief. His record improves to 1-0. Jordan Allison took the loss. The loss puts Detroit at 9-2.
Castro had a game-changing home run in the top of the 11th. On a 2-2 sinker from Jordan Allison, he banged a 3-run home run to left, giving the Colonels an 8-5 lead. It was the 2nd home run of the year for Castro.
"We cashed in when we had the chance," said Charlotte manager Jason Wainwright.
GAME 3 - Colonels Deal Dukes 4-1 Defeat
Charlotte turned a good effort from starter Jordan Williams into a win over the Detroit Dukes at Dukes Field. The final score was 4-1. Williams got the win, improving to 2-0. He allowed 7 hits and walked 4 over 8 innings. Williams allowed 1 run. Edwin Martinez earned the save, his 4th, for the Colonels.
Michael Dickens, the three-time All-Star, had a direct impact on the outcome. Dickens contributed a 2-run single in the top of the ninth inning to put Charlotte up, 4-1.
"Nice to tuck this win away," said Dickens.
The loss makes Detroit 9-3.
Atlanta Kings (2-10) @ Minneapolis Blizzard (4-8)
Blizzard Wins Series 2-1
Minneapolis fails to sweep as Atlanta wins only their second game of the season.
GAME 1 - Luna Excels, But Blizzard Win
The Minneapolis Blizzard outlasted Jonathan Luna and the Atlanta Kings, 9-8. Luna was impressive in the loss. The Atlanta center fielder went 2 for 4 with a home run and a walk, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 5. Arturo Garcia collected save number 1. The loss drops the Kings to 1-9.
Enrique Amaya, the 5th overall pick in the 1978 draft, came through for Minneapolis with a 2-run home run in the bottom of the seventh. The shortstop went 2 for 4 for the game, including 1 home run and 1 double. He scored 1 run and collected 2 runs batted in.
"We'll build on this win," said Amaya.
GAME 2 - Lopez Stops Atlanta Cold, 5-0
Today Blizzard pitcher Emilio Lopez sparkled in a 5-hit shutout against the Atlanta Kings at Minneapolis Grounds. He fanned 10 and walked 4 to help Minneapolis post the 5-0 win.
GAME 3 - Kings Win, 3-2, at Minneapolis
Atlanta Kings starter Mike Hawkins was in a rhythm all game. He led his team to a win over the Minneapolis Blizzard, 3-2. Hawkins went 8 innings to notch the win. He scattered 6 hits, walked 1, and struck out 1. His record improves to 1-1. The Blizzard, now 4-8, continue their inauspicious start.
Who knows how it might've ended, had it not been for Luis Rosales? The Atlanta second baseman had a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning to put the Kings on top, 1-0. For the game, Rosales had 1 double and 1 single in 4 at-bats.
"Win or lose, we pick each other up in this clubhouse," Rosales told the Atlanta News.
Tampa Bay Storm (5-7) @ San Diego Seraphs (3-9)
Storm Sweeps Series 3-0
Tampa Bay rains all over San Diego in a sweep.
GAME 1 - Storm Win, 8-1, at San Diego
The Tampa Bay Storm topped the San Diego Seraphs, 8-1, in National Baseball Conference action at Seraphs Field. The standout performance belonged to Tampa Bay pitcher and Visalia, California, native Sergio Martinez. Martinez got the win, improving to 2-0. He allowed 6 hits and walked 4 over 9 innings. Martinez allowed 1 run. The win has Tampa Bay at 3-7.
Who knows how it might've ended, had it not been for Cory Lynn? The Tampa Bay third baseman had a bases-clearing double in the top of the fourth inning to put the Storm on top, 3-1. For the game, Lynn had 1 double and 1 single in 5 at-bats.
"One win at a time, one game at a time. We try not to get too far ahead of ourselves," Martinez told the Tampa Bay Gazette.
GAME 2 - Lynn Excels in 8-5 Tampa Bay Win
Tampa Bay and San Diego duked it out and the Storm came out victorious.
The Tampa Bay Storm downed the San Diego Seraphs, 8-5, at Seraphs Field. Cory Lynn led the way, going 4-for-5 for Tampa Bay. Luis Carrera closed it out for his 2nd save.
Lynn contributed in the top of the fourth. With runners on 2nd and 3rd, he hit a 2-run double. It was one at-bat among others that helped Tampa Bay get the win.
"If we play like this, we can win a lot of games," Lynn told the Tampa Bay Gazette.
Tampa Bay is now 4-7.
GAME 3 - Storm Win at San Diego, 7-4
Nate Smeltz helped his team muscle past the San Diego Seraphs, 7-4. In the game, the Tampa Bay designated hitter was 3 for 5 with a home run and a double, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once. The win has Tampa Bay at 5-7.
In the top of the first of a scoreless game, Smeltz hit a 2-run home run to put his team ahead.
"I felt good up there," said Smeltz. "I saw the ball well."
Miami Hurricanes (6-6) @ San Francisco Warriors (7-5)

San Francisco breaks up sweep attempt with game 3 laugher.
GAME 1 - Hurricanes Get One-Run Win at San Francisco
The Miami Hurricanes did just enough to sneak past the San Francisco Warriors, 2-1, at San Francisco Grounds. Miami pitcher Bill Borden, in particular, had a standout performance. Borden went 8 innings to notch the win. He scattered 5 hits, walked 0, and struck out 4. His record improves to 2-1. Eric Behan got the save, the 2nd for him this season.
Dave Trujillo, the 33-year-old shortstop, had a direct impact on the outcome. Trujillo contributed a solo home run in the top of the third inning to put Miami up, 2-0.
"I just trusted my stuff," said Borden.
Miami goes to 5-5.
GAME 2 - Hurricanes Upend Warriors, 4-2
Miami Hurricanes starter David Victorero was in a rhythm all game. He led his team to a win over the San Francisco Warriors, 4-2. The win gives Miami a record of 6-5.
Miami used a well-timed hit by Jose Barajas to capture the win. The second baseman socked a run-scoring double in the top of the fifth inning to put the Hurricanes ahead, 2-0. Though it was his only hit in 3 at-bats, it was important.
"I'm just trying to make good contact," said Barajas, "one at bat at a time."
GAME 3 - Pineda, Warriors Get 10-1 Win
The San Francisco Warriors topped the Miami Hurricanes, 10-1, in National Baseball Conference action at San Francisco Grounds. The game was highlighted by the performance of San Francisco pitcher Antonio Pineda. San Francisco goes to 7-5.
Pineda gave San Francisco a solid start. The right-hander allowed 1 run on 6 hits over 9 innings.
"We'll savor this win," Pineda told the San Francisco Citizen, "then get ready for the next game."
Dallas Rustlers (9-3) @ Los Angeles Cobras (8-4)
Rustlers Win Series 2-1
Dallas puts an exclamation point on the series win with a game 3 blowout.
GAME 1 - Cobras Need Extra Innings to Top Rustlers, 7-6
Cobras fans were treated to an exciting walk-off win.
The Los Angeles Cobras downed the Dallas Rustlers, 7-6. The hitting star was right fielder Bill Haywood. Haywood was 3 for 6 with a home run and a double while scoring 2 and driving in 2 for the Cobras. The win puts Los Angeles at 8-2.
The clutch at-bat came in the bottom of the 11th inning, when Los Angeles first baseman Ramon Reyes, facing Joe Guy, had a run-scoring ground out. It gave the Cobras the 7-6 win.
"Honestly, I'm not frustrated," said Dallas manager Brian Parsley. "The effort was great."
GAME 2 - Rustlers Deal Cobras 7-5 Defeat
The Dallas Rustlers overcame a good performance by Los Angeles second baseman Emmanuel Robertson to knock off Los Angeles, 7-5, at Cobras Ballpark. Robertson went 2 for 3 with 2 singles and 2 walks, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once. Gabriel Zayas, who went 7 innings, was the winning pitcher. He was charged with 4 runs on 8 hits while walking 5 and striking out 3. His record now stands at 3-0. The Rustlers raised their record to 8-3.
Dallas used the bat of Rich Vela to get the win. The left fielder hammered a 3-run home run in the top of the second inning to put the Rustlers ahead, 4-2. It was his lone hit in 4 at-bats, but it did its damage.
"Our guys are never satisfied," said Dallas manager Brian Parsley.
GAME 3 - Barlow Shines in 14-4 Dallas Win
Devon Barlow was a major factor in the 14-4 Dallas win over Los Angeles. The Rustlers catcher was 3 for 6 with a home run, a triple, and a double. He scored 2 times and drove in 5. The win puts Dallas at 9-3.
Who knows how it might've ended, had it not been for Jose Castillo? The Dallas second baseman had a bases-clearing double in the top of the fourth inning to put the Rustlers on top, 7-3. For the game, Castillo had 1 double and 2 singles in 4 at-bats.
"We'll relax tonight and enjoy this win," said Castillo.
Chicago Fire (6-6) @ Phoenix Firebirds (5-7)
Fire Wins Series 2-1
Dallas continues their solid start with a strong team series win.
GAME 1 - Walk-Off Win Makes Phoenix 5-5
Phoenix pitcher Stephen Grimes did his part in helping his team beat the Chicago Fire, 4-3. The right-hander kept opposing batters in check throughout the game. The winner was Phoenix reliever Omar Espinoza, now 1-0. The loser was Oscar Roa. The win gives Phoenix a record of 5-5.
The Firebirds procured the win, in large part because of second baseman Raul de la Torre. In the bottom of the tenth, he produced the game-winning run-scoring double.
"Sometimes winning takes more than 27 outs," said Firebirds manager Bill Benisch.
GAME 2 - Jury Now 1-0 After Subduing Firebirds
The Chicago Fire picked up a win at Phoenix Grounds, knocking off the Phoenix Firebirds, 7-1. Starting pitcher John Jury played a key role in the triumph. The victory makes Chicago 5-6.
Jury gave Chicago a solid start. The right-hander allowed 1 run on 5 hits over 9 innings.
"We were able to get some things going offensively," said Jury.
GAME 3 - Razor-Sharp Gonzalez Blanks Phoenix
Edgar Gonzalez of the Chicago Fire put the clamps on the opposition and held the Phoenix Firebirds scoreless in a 6-hit win.
"He's got some good stuff, but we should have done better than that," said Phoenix skipper Bill Benisch after the 5-0 loss.
Gonzalez was on target most of the game and finished with 13 strikeouts and 2 walks.
