New York Aces (7-5) @ Nashville Blues (7-5)
Blues Win Series 2-1
After facing NY Ace, Nashville settles in to take series.


GAME 1 - Oubre Goes Distance in 7-1 Win
The New York Aces defeated the Nashville Blues, 7-1, in American Baseball Conference action at Blues Stadium. New York pitcher Tony Oubre had a standout performance. New York goes to 7-3.

Oubre allowed 1 run on 7 hits over 9 innings for the Aces. He walked 1 and struck out 9.

Despite the victory, Oubre was prickly with assembled media after the game. He said only that he was "happy with the win."


GAME 2 - Orozco Powers Blues to 15-4 Win
Getting a good performance from third baseman Jose Orozco, the Nashville Blues defeated the New York Aces, 15-4. Orozco was 4 for 5 with 2 doubles and 2 singles. He scored 2 runs and drove in 5 for the Blues. The defeat makes New York 7-4.

Chang-ho Lee, who won the Robin Yount ROY Award in 1977, chipped in for Nashville with a grand slam home run in the bottom of the sixth. For the game, the catcher had 2 hits in 5 at-bats with 1 home run, 1 single, 2 runs scored, and 5 runs batted in.

"I like our moxie," said Blues manager Francisco Hernandez.


GAME 3 - Blues Prevail, 5-3, Over New York
The Nashville Blues beat the New York Aces, 5-3. Nashville pitcher and Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, native Antonio Hernandez led the way. The win puts Nashville at 7-5.

Carlos Chavez, the 15th overall pick in the 1976 draft, aided the Nashville cause with a run-scoring single in the bottom of the sixth. For the game, the catcher was 1 for 4.

"We did a lot of things right," said Hernandez.



Boston Patriots (6-6) @ St. Louis Stallions (7-5)
Patriots Win Series 2-1
Boston comes back after game 1 drubbing to take the series.


GAME 1 - Win Makes Stallions 7-3
The St. Louis Stallions picked up a win at Stallions Grounds, knocking off the Boston Patriots, 10-3. On the mound for St. Louis was left-hander Bert Lopez, who played a pivotal role in the win. Lopez went the distance for St. Louis. He gave up 3 runs on 6 hits. The win puts St. Louis at 7-3.

The Stallions got an important contribution from left fielder Spencer Barrier, who in the bottom of the third punched a first-pitch sinker into left-center for a 2-run double. It was his 1st double of the season and put the Stallions ahead, 5-2.

Barrier told a St. Louis Bulletin reporter that he was "gratified" with the win.


GAME 2 - Martinez, Patriots Get 4-2 Win
Getting an impressive start from Pedro Martinez, Boston beat St. Louis by the score of 4-2. The win puts Boston at 5-6.

Martinez was effective for Boston, seldom allowing the Stallions to square up a pitch. The right-hander tossed 110 pitches over 8.2 innings. He limited St. Louis to just 1 run on 4 hits.

"I really like what we did out there today," Martinez said after the game.


GAME 3 - Patriots Drop Stallions, 8-6
Boston and St. Louis duked it out and the Patriots came out victorious.

Jesse Gonzales led Boston to a win over St. Louis. The final score was 8-6. The left fielder collected 3 extra-base hits, including 2 triples and 1 double. He also delivered 1 RBI. Adam Smith got the save, the 2nd for him this season.

Joe Turner, who finished 2nd in the ABC in home runs with 32 in 1972, helped out the Boston cause in the top of the seventh inning with a run-scoring single. For the game, the pinch hitter was 1-1.

"We'll kick back tonight and enjoy this win," said Turner.

St. Louis drops to 7-5.



Pittsburgh Express (5-7) @ Portland Lumberjacks (4-8)
Express Wins Series 2-1
Pittsburgh fails to sweep as Lumberjacks walk off game 3 in extras.


GAME 1 - Express Slap 6-2 Loss on Lumberjacks
The Pittsburgh Express got a strong performance from pitcher David Acuna, who stymied the Portland offense en route to a win, 6-2, at Portland Grounds. Acuna, now 1-1, was the winner. In 9 innings, he gave up 6 hits, while striking out 6, walking 2, and allowing 2 runs. Portland falls to 3-7.

Tony Villalta, the 29-year-old right fielder, had a direct impact on the outcome. Villalta contributed a run-scoring ground out in the top of the second inning to put Pittsburgh up, 2-0.

In postgame comments to the Pittsburgh Today, Villalta said, "If the effort is there, the wins will come."


GAME 2 - Velazquez, Express Clobber Lumberjacks, 11-2
The Pittsburgh Express had no problem beating the Portland Lumberjacks, 11-2, at Portland Grounds. Erick Velazquez led the way. He went 4-5 with a double and 3 singles while adding 4 RBI and scoring once for Pittsburgh. The win leaves Pittsburgh with a record of 5-6.

Luis Sanchez, the slugging first baseman, had a direct impact on the outcome. Sanchez contributed a 3-run home run in the top of the second inning to put Pittsburgh up, 5-0.

"We did a lot of things right," said Sanchez.


GAME 3 - Lumberjacks Take Nail-Biter Over Express
The Portland Lumberjacks beat the Pittsburgh Express by a score of 5-3. Portland shortstop Lance Gregg deserved the lion's share of the credit. Gregg went 2 for 3 with 2 singles and 2 walks, while scoring 2 runs for the Lumberjacks. Portland reliever Frank Jahr picked up the win, upping his record to 1-0. Alex Dunlap took the loss. The loss has the Express at 5-7.

Portland won the game in the bottom of the 12th inning. With no outs and Alex Dunlap on the mound for Pittsburgh, designated hitter Mike Hargett hit a dramatic 2-run home run, bringing Lumberjacks fans to their feet.

"We'll put that win in the can," said Hargett, "and go after the next one."



Philadelphia Fury (5-7) @ Seattle Comets (6-6)
Comets Win Series 2-1
Seattle manages to come up with a series win vs. a struggling Philadelphia team.


GAME 1 - Fury Drop Comets, 4-1
The Philadelphia Fury went home winners at Seatlle Stadium, thanks in large part to starter Mike Stanley. Stanley stifled the Seattle Comets, enabling Philadelphia to grab the 4-1 win. The save was credited to Oscar Rebeles, his 1st. Seattle falls to 4-6.

Philadelphia used the clutch hitting of Jesus Gaona to capture the win. The shortstop drilled a run-scoring double in the top of the sixth inning to give the Fury the lead, 2-0. For the game, Gaona had 1 single and 1 double in 3 at-bats.

Gaona told a Philadelphia Times reporter that he was "satisfied" with the win.


GAME 2 - Comets Sneak Past Fury, 2-1
The Seattle Comets had to overcome a fine performance from Philadelphia pitcher Matt Adams to grab a 2-1 win at Seattle Stadium. Adams allowed 1 run over 8 innings. The Fury drop to 5-6 and continue their mediocre start to the 1981 season.

Do-Hyun Hu was the walk-off hero for Seattle. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Comets third baseman hit a dramatic run-scoring single to send the teams home.

"We'll kick back tonight and enjoy this win," said Hu.


GAME 3 - Comets Stop Fury, 5-2
The Seattle Comets got a good effort from starter Rene Oregon in defeating the Philadelphia Fury at Seattle Stadium. The final score was 5-2. The victory makes Seattle 6-6.

The Comets got a big at-bat from first baseman Alex Bautista. For the game, Bautista went 1 for 4 with a home run, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once. In the bottom of the first, with runners on 1st and 2nd, he stroked a 3-run home run. His 2nd home run of the season gave Seattle a 3-0 lead.

"Winning never gets dull," said Bautista.



Houston Mavericks (4-8) @ Denver Rocketeers (7-5)
Rocketeers Sweep Series 3-0
Denver has all the answers for the Mavs in a three-game sweep.


GAME 1 - Mavericks Absorb 5-3 Loss at Rocketeers Field
Denver Rocketeers starter Dave DiAngelo pitched a strong game against the Houston Mavericks at Rocketeers Field, leading the Rocketeers to victory, 5-3. In 8 innings, DiAngelo surrendered 8 hits, while striking out 2 and walking 0. He allowed 3 runs. The loss makes Houston 4-6.

The Rocketeers got a big at-bat from right fielder Jesus Lago. For the game, Lago was 1-3 with a triple. He drove in 3 runs and scored once. In the bottom of the first, with runners on 2nd and 3rd, he stroked a 2-run triple. His 1st triple of the season gave Denver a 2-1 lead.

DiAngelo said his team "played with determination."


GAME 2 - Rocketeers Take Down Mavericks, 11-10
Despite a fine performance by center fielder Apostolos Georghiou, the Houston Mavericks lost to the Denver Rocketeers, 11-10. Georghiou was 2-5 with a home run and a walk while scoring 3 and driving in 2. Denver reliever Randy Calvert picked up the win to move to 1-0. Ernesto Marroquin suffered the loss. The loss has the Mavericks at 4-7.

A crucial at-bat came with the bases loaded and no one out in the bottom of the seventh inning. That's when catcher Tony Bautista hit a 2-run single. The Rocketeers went on to win.

"That was your kind of game if you like high drama," said Rocketeers manager Greg Asche.


GAME 3 - Rocketeers Earn 6-3 Win Versus Houston
Denver Rocketeers starter John Wolfe was locked-in. He led his team to a win over the Houston Mavericks, 6-3. The Mavericks fall to 4-8 and continue their unimpressive start to the 1981 season.

In the bottom of the sixth, Denver left fielder Boboy Nierva gave his team the lead. With two out and a runner on 1st, Dr. Sticks hit his 1st home run of the year. Houston pitcher Alvaro Marrero surrendered it. With that, the Rocketeers jumped in front, 4-3.

Nierva called winning a team effort. "It's not the same guy every time," he said. "It's the sum of the parts."



Cincinnati Cougars (5-7) @ Las Vegas Gamblers (9-3)
Gamblers Win Series 2-1
Las Vegas fails to sweep after two close wins.


GAME 1 - Gamblers Beat Cincinnati, 3-2
The Las Vegas Gamblers got a stellar effort from pitcher Bobby Rodriguez, helping Las Vegas score a win over the visiting Cincinnati Cougars, 3-2. Rodriguez picked up the win for Las Vegas, going 8 innings. He gave up 2 runs on 6 hits. He now sports a record of 2-0. Las Vegas is off to a hot start at 8-2.

Las Vegas took a 3-2 lead on Mario Smithson's 1st triple of the season. The 2-run triple, which Smithson hit in the bottom of the eighth, left Cincinnati pitcher Gil Medina visibly frustrated.

"The key at this level is throwing strike one," said Rodriguez. "Successful pitchers do it."


GAME 2 - Gamblers Prevail, 4-2, Over Cincinnati
The Las Vegas Gamblers got a stellar performance from pitcher Oscar Herrera, who handcuffed the Cincinnati offense en route to a win, 4-2, at Gamblers Park. At 9-2, the Gamblers have played well so far.

The Gamblers got a big at-bat from first baseman Jose Charon. For the game, Charon went 1 for 3 with a double, while adding 2 RBI. In the bottom of the fifth, with runners on 1st and 2nd, he stroked a 2-run double. His 1st double of the season gave Las Vegas a 4-2 lead.

"Oscar was able to execute his pitches," said Las Vegas manager Matt Petrie. "Simple as that."


GAME 3 - Cougars Deal Gamblers 10-2 Loss
The performance of Victor Torres proved critical in helping Cincinnati beat Las Vegas, 10-2. The Cougars left fielder was 4 for 5 with a double, 3 singles, and a walk. He scored 3 times. The loss drops the Gamblers to 9-3.

Lance Lynd, the two-time Golden Glove Award winner, had a direct impact on the outcome. Lynd contributed a run-scoring hit-by-pitch in the top of the first inning to put Cincinnati up, 3-0.

"We had a nice day," said Cincinnati skipper Chris Allison.
