The first day of free agency is the most important because the AI gets an advantage over the player in that they will often get prospects to accept minor-league offers after the first day whereas we humans don't get that advantage. Our contract offers often linger for at least a week to give the AI time to decide if it wants the same prospect.
I'm sure it probably saves a lot of AI computation if, when the AI offers a minor-league contract to a player that the human is not interested in, it's often automatically accepted. But if the human got that same advantage, it would be quickly discovered and exploited pretty badly against the AI.
However, what this means is that, if the human player doesn't want potential prospects whisked away before he gets a chance at them, he needs to get out of bed early, do his homework, and make offers from every potential minor-leaguer he wants on the first day.
Which is what I did.
