The Cardinals had an easy time winning their second straight NL pennant. The also set a National League record with 102 wins. They became the first NL team to pass the century mark in victories. Unfortunately, their World Series hopes took a hit when their ace, Tim "Presto" Lopresto, suffered a severe strain in his pitching elbow on September 22nd, forcing him to miss the World Series.

Also of note, the Chicago Cubs finished the season 72-82 for the first losing season in the franchise's history. The had 14 consecutive winning seasons including 2 pennants and 1 World Series victory. The New York Giants finished the season at 80-74. That was the team's first winning season in 8 years when they miraculously won the World Series in 1907 - the franchise's only other winning season. Also, the Boston Braves became the first team in baseball history to lose 100 games. They finished the season an unbelievable 51 games out of first with a 52-102 record.

The AL pennant race went down to the wire betwen three teams. Detroit was swept by the White Sox on September 10-12, sending the Tigers into a tailspin from which they never recovered. That sweep was part of a 7-game winning streak for Chicago, who also went 4-2 against the Broncos in two key series this month. However, they lost their starting shortstop "Flaky" Arsenault for the season back on September 3rd with severe inflamation in his leg. Cleveland also lost one of their top pitchers, Clifton Bradin, to an injury for the second time this season, this time with elbow problems. On the last day of the season, Cleveland had a 1-game lead over the White Sox. Chicago defeated Philadelphia behind a masterful 3-hit shutout from the arm of ace Andrew Murphy, but Cleveland lost to Boston 8-5 in what turned out to be an offensive game despite both teams throwing out their top pitchers - Boston's Dorsey MacIntyre and Cleveland's Allan Gilbrech.

For the first time in baseball history, a pennant championship game was played. It was Cleveland versus Chicago for AL bragging rights and a trip to the World Series. The game was played in Cleveland. Both teams had used their top pitchers in the last series of the season, so the Broncos threw out Cliff Loza (6-4, 2.60) and the Sox started Tom DeBeare (14-23, 4.10). The game was scoreless through five innings until Cleveland broke through for five runs in the 6th. Chicago added 3 in the 7th, but the Broncos added two more to the scoreboard and won 7-3.

World Series

St. Louis got an extra day's rest due to the one game playoff between Cleveland and Chicago in the AL. However, the Cardinals are still distraught over the loss of ace Tim Lopresto (29-7, 1.33). Yet, Cleveland is without one of their top pitchers too, Clifton Bradin (20-13, 2.75). The Broncos still have Allan Gilbrech (24-12, 2.30) to lead their staff, as he has done for the past two months with Bradin in and out of the lineup. Cleveland suddenly appears to have a superior rotation with Rob Greenwald (19-16, 2.71) and "Musclehead" Smith (19-14, 3.92) pitching behind Gilbrech. St. Louis now turns to young Jeffrey Roland (23-10, 2.41) to lead their rotation that includes 24-year-old Fists Ubert (21-11, 2.98) and veteran Reggie "The Duke" McQuirter (14-8, 1.74). These pitchers are still tough and should match up well with the Broncos' starters.

Undoubtedly, the key player in this series will again be St. Louis second baseman Woody Woodson who hit .391 this season. He had just 2 homers and 66 RBI, but he still has a lot of power after hitting 34 homers and collecting 252 RBI over the previous three seasons. The Cardinals scored the 2nd most runs in baseball and have a .277 team average that was 3rd highest in the game. Cleveland hit an unusually low .266 this season, but they still led the league with 230 steals. Once again, the key for Cleveland will be getting those speedy runners on base and letting them put pressure on the Cardinals' young pitchers.

My Prediction: St. Louis beat Cleveland soundly in the last World Series, and they are favored to do so again. Cleveland is 0-for-3 in World Series appearances, but perhaps being the underdog for once will help them. I don't see that happening however, and I predict the Cardinals will again win in 5 games.
