Add him back to your team as if you wanted to keep him (you might need to temporarily option someone down to make room on active roster).
Once he shows up on your active roster and on your 40man, edit him to MLB / free agents as shown in the screenshot I posted above.
When you go back to your team, he will be off your active and 40man rosters (then recalled whoever you may have optioned before advancing).
Give that a try.
