June 9-11, 2034: at Boston (3)
Rays took 2 of 3 in Fenway to get back on track after the Yankee series.
Randy Morris kept rolling and so did the offense as they routed the Red Sox 10-0 in the opener in Boston. Morris had his fourth straight excellent start after a disastrous debut, going to 4-1 with a 5 5 0 0 1 5 outing. And he was staked to plenty of early support as the Rays went up 7-0 after 3 led by Masaharu Shimizu's 3-run shot (#9) and a 2-run 1st-inning double from Orlando Tosado. Jake Westfall drove in 3 with a pair of run-scoring hits as well.
The Rays shook off a 4-0 first inning deficit to overwhelm Boston 12-4 in the second game. Chris Ferguson's recent struggles continued at 4.1 6 4 4 3 4 but at least he settled in some after giving up all the runs in the first. Jake Westfall started the comeback with a 2-run homer (#13) in the 3rd and Danny Arroyave, who ended up with 3 doubles and 4 RBI, hit one of them to drive in the tying runs before Joe Stack singled in the go-ahead game-winner. Arturo Gutierrez put the cherry on top with an 8th-inning grand slam (#19) and Chris Ericson (3-3) earned the win with 2 2/3 perfect in relief.
After scoring at will in the first two games of the series, the Rays' bats didn't get going until they were already 6-0 down and fell 7-4 to Boston in the finale. Ethan McElvain (4-4) was let down his defense, most notably a pair of Wander Franco errors, and finished 5.1 4 3 1 3 0 but Ty Madden really put it out of reach by allowing 3 runs in relief. Homers from Diego Cartaya (#3, solo) and Jake Westfall (#14, a 2-run shot) got them within 6-4 in the 8th but that was as close as things got.
Team record: 40-24. The Yankees took 2 of 3 from the Jays so the ridiculously-tight AL East sees Toronto on top, 1/2 up on New York and a game on the Rays. Next up: We head to Atlanta for 3 games.
MLB News: Seattle star Julio Rodriguez hit his 400th career homer over the weekend and former Rays star Austin Meadows announced his retirement at the end of the season.
