A move like this would have very little to do with PT in my opinion. The pricing model you mentioned is the exact model used by nearly every baseball replay game other than Digital Diamond. Strat, ActionPC, Diamond Mind, etc. all charge you ~$49 for the base game and a handful of seasons. Then you end up paying ~$15 per season (or less if you wait for sales).
Y'all are going to end up with ulcers worrying about the future of something you have zero control over like this. Live in the present, enjoy the game the way you want to enjoy it, and have fun! If you're unable to have fun with the game, then move on to something that makes you happy.
