Games 24-26: Boston Americans vs. Philadelphia Athletics
Well, the good ride was bound to end and it finally did in the City of Brotherly Love. The Philadelphia Athletics took 2 of 3 from the Boston Americans, including a dramatic walk-off extra innings win.
Game 24: This was a tough one to lose, as Boston (18-6) fell behind several times but came back to tie heading into extra innings. After scoring 2 runs in the top of the 11th inning, it was looking good for the visiting team, but the Philadelphia Athletics (8-16) had other plans and scored 3 runs in the bottom of the inning to steal the 7 to 6 victory. Doc McJames (1-1) picked up the win by going the distance and allowing 6 runs (3 earned) on 12 hits and 5 walks; Game Score of 53. Sam Leever didn't factor into the decision, as he was pulled from the game after 7 innings in which he allowed 4 runs (3 earned) on 8 hits and 1 walk; Game Score of 48. Ham Iburg pitched 2 innings of scoreless ball, then turned it over to Duke Esper (0-1) who surrendered 3 earned runs on 4 hits over 1 2/3 innings in the loss. Billy Maloney (2 for 5, Triple, 1 Run, 2 RBIs), Tom McCreery (2 for 5, 1 Run, 1 RBI), and Larry McLean (2 for 3, 2 RBIs) hit the ball well for the home team, while Fred Clarke (3 for 5, 1 Run, 2 RBIs, 1 Walk), Frank Chance (2 for 4, 1 RBI, 2 Walks, 2 Stolen Bases) shined in the loss.

Game 25: A nice bounce-back win for the visiting team, as the Boston Americans (19-6) topped the Philadelphia Athletics (8-17) by a score of 10 to 2. Noodles Hahn (4-2) pitched a dominate 99-pitch game, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 5 hits for a Game Score of 74. Earl Moore (3-4) was knocked out of the game after 7 2/3 innings, allowing 9 runs (6 earned) on 12 hits and 6 walks; Game Score of 20. Kid Carsey pitched the final 1 1/3 innings in which he allowed 1 run (earned) on 3 hits. Chick Stahl (3 for 4, 2 Runs, 1 RBI, 1 Walk, 2 Stolen Bases), Bill Lange (3 for 4, 2 Runs, 1 RBI, 1 Walk, 2 Stolen Bases), and John Farrell (2 for 5, Double, 2 Runs, 1 RBI) gave the run support that was needed. Socks Seybold (2 for 3, 1 Run, 1 RBI, 1 Stolen Base) was the lone bright spot in the losing effort.
Player of the Game: Noodles Hahn (Season: #4 / Career: #29)
Game 26: Buttons Briggs came into the game sporting an era above 4 and an 0-6 record (this is on top of his 5.65 ERA and 0-2 record last year), yet he somehow managed to toss a complete game win to lead his Philadelphia Athletics (9-17) to a 3 to 1 victory over the Boston Americans (19-7). Briggs allowed 1 run (0 earned) while scattering 9 hits to finish with a Game Score of 70. Cy Young (4-3) took the loss despite allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on 8 hits and 2 walks; Game Score of 57. Leading the way at the plate for the Athletics was Socks Seybold (2 for 4, 2 Doubles, 1 Run) and Billy Maloney (2 for 4, 1 RBI). Kid Elberfeld (2 for 4, Double, 1 Run) contributed in the loss.
