CUBAN LEAGUE MAY IMPACT RULE 5 CHOICES
The new Cuban League is making FABL General Managers take a second look at some prospects and perhaps reconsider some moves in advance of the rule five draft slated for just over a week from now. Here is a look at some players from each big league organization that are presently eligible for the rule five but have performed quite well in Cuba.
BOSTON-31/40 on secondary roster: Boston does not have a lot in the way of Rule 5 eligible players in Cuba with the closest one to being considered for inclusion on the secondary roster is likely Charlie Todd. He has not looked bad in two winter starts (0-1, 3.21) but certainly has not shown anything to move the needle on whether Boston should add him to their secondary roster or not.
BROOKLYN- 38/40: Bob Martin is a former 11th rounder who has looked pretty good out of the bullpen in Cuba so far. Whether that is enough to convince the Kings to add the 24 year old to their secondary roster remains to be seen.
CHIEFS- 36/40: Ed Troy is a 23 year old lefthander who went 10-15 at AA Memphis last season. He is 1-1 with a 2.25 era for Cienfuegos but we are not sure if that is enough to convince the Chiefs to add the 1941 6th rounder to their secondary roster. They also have another lefthander in 24 year old Harvey Mitchell suiting up in Cuba. Mitchell was 10-12 at AAA Fort Wayne and OSA feels he could be a big league reliever at some point in his career.
COUGARS- 35/40: Ducky Cole is making management with the Cougars take notice after the 22 year old outfielder went 12-for-38 with a pair of homers for Santa Clara in the Cuban loop. A 1942 7th round selection, Cole has not played much. He missed most of last season with an injury and the previous season serving in the Army.
CINCINNATI- 31/40: The Cannons have plenty of room to add players to their secondary roster and it is a good thing considering they have 4 pitchers off to a solid start in Havana that are eligible for the rule 5. Red Hampton and Dizzy Danforth are the 2 main ones that come to mind but Charlie Meads and Biff Turner have also performed well.
CLEVELAND- 39/40: Outfielders Tom Holmes Jr. and Gus Wehrman have been two of the better offensive producers in Cuba so perhaps both are in consideration for the final open spot on the Foresters secondary roster although you have to think that Davey Morris- a 22 year old pitcher selected in the 11th round of the 1942 draft has the inside track. Morris projects as a potential top of the rotation arm according to OSA and has been outstanding for Santiago of the Cuban League.
DETROIT- 38/40: The Dynamos just added Crab Crowley and Al Ahearn to their secondary roster bringing them up to 38. Ahearn is off to a nice start in Havana while Crowley got the nod to be added over Jackie Harper as both young catchers are spending the winter in Havana.
MONTREAL- 40/40: Montreal's secondary roster is full so they will need to waive someone if they want to make room for a player like Gig Taylor. The 23 year old outfielder is a former 2nd round pick who missed 3 years due to the war. He split last season between A and AA and was not overly impressive but his .300 batting average with 3 homeruns in 11 Cuban League games might draw some attention. The Saints have another outfielder exposed to the rule five who is off to a decent start in Cuba as well in 24 year old Frank Ellis.
NY STARS- 36/40: The big non-secondary roster player the Stars have in Cuba is 23 year old pitcher Bill Chapman. A top 100 OSA prospect, Chapman will certainly be added to the secondary roster in advance of the rule 5 daft. The same is likely true for 22 year old centerfielder Clyde Fleenor, who his hitting .238 in Manzanillo after splitting last season between Class A and AA.
NY GOTHAMS- 40/40: The Gothams secondary roster is full and there are not a lot of rule 5 eligible Gothams doing much in Cuba although Johnny Watts has had a couple of solid starts. The 1941 8th rounder is 23 years old but struggled in a brief test at AAA last year.
KEYSTONES- 40/40: The Keystones may need to find room to add Ralph Millsap and Roger Cleaves to their 40-man roster, but that means a couple players will have to go. Millsap is a 25 year old former 6th rounder who split last season between AA and AAA and has been very good in 2 starts for Manzanillo. He perhaps will be left exposed but the same will almost certainly not be said for Cleaves - a 22 year old catcher and half-brother of Pittsburgh Miners star George Cleaves, Cannons pitcher Deuce Barrell and the now-retired Jack Cleaves. Roger has limited experience as he went into the Marines right out of high school and has just one year of pro ball under his belt. He is hitting .200 after 7 games in Cuba.
SAILORS- 35/40: Cecil Gust is a 25 year old third baseman who might be the perfect example of a player making the most of a Cuban League opportunity. Whether the Sailors want to add him to their secondary roster is not known but he might get some interest if he is exposed after hitting .357 and playing outstanding defense at the hot corner the past 3 weeks. He was originally a 5th round pick of Detroit in 1939 but signed with the Sailors as a free agent last winter. Pitcher Hoppy Johnson was selected 5th overall in 1943 and is presently not on the secondary roster but that is certain to change even before his two outstanding starts for Holguin, including one where he fanned 15.
PITTSBURGH- 37/40: Joe Reed is off to a great start in Mantanzas, going 5-for-9 at the plate. Even with that strong display it seemed a near certainty the Miners would add the 22 year old centerfielder to their secondary roster. Reed, a 1942 6th rounder, hit .278 at AAA St Paul last season.
ST LOUIS- 39/40: 23 year old Chin Nichols is an 11th round pick who excelled with the glove at shortstop in AA this past season. His hitting has been the concern and he batted just .219 this past season. He is hitting a little better for Santiago in 11 Cuban League games but probably not well enough to force a decision to add him to the Pioneers secondary roster.
TORONTO- Pete Thompson is a 24 year old righthander who spent most of last season in AA. A second round pick back in 1939 he has looked very good in two Cuban starts for Camaguey. Another 24 year old is Dom Tripp, an outfielder who is 6-for-8 in a Cuban League that has been dominated by pitching. Scouts are not necessarily that high on the 1943 6th rounder out of Carolina Poly but his numbers in Cuba bear close watching this week.
WASHINGTON- 33/40: There are a couple of 24 year old Eagles mound prospects that have had some success for Santa Clara in the Cuban loop but whether it is enough to get them added to the secondary roster is certainly in doubt. Ed Jubinville put up solid numbers in Class A last season but as a 23 year old so that certainly tempers his performance's value a bit. Russ Shinner is a 12th rounder from 1941 who went 11-11 at Kansas City but OSA questions whether either have what it takes to contribute in the big leagues. Then there is 22 year old Frank Porter, who excelled as a reliever at AA Atlanta a year ago but lost both of his Cuban starts.
STARS, WILDCATS SET FOR REMATCH OF '41 AFA TITLE
The American Football Association season came to an end with both the Chicago Wildcats and New York Football Stars accomplishing what needed to be done to ensure they won their respective divisions. The Stars, at 8-3, finished tied with the Washington Wasps for the East Division lead, but New York's 14-0 triumph over the Wasps two weeks ago gave them the division title. In the West the Chicago Wildcats qualified for next weekend's championship game with a 7-4 record, 1 win better than the second place Cleveland Finches.
It will be a rematch of the thrilling 1941 title game which was won 10-7 by the Wildcats on an Eddie Andrews field goal as time expired, and the 1937 game in which the Stars tamed the Wildcats 34-0. The Stars also won AFA title in 1930. The Wildcats are back in the title tilt after a two-year absence, and this will be their 7th appearance in the championship game. Chicago is 2-4 in the title contests but has won each of the last two that they appeared in. Chicago has a record five AFA titles in all with wins coming in 1921, 1926, 1928, 1941 and 1943.

STARS EXPLODE IN SECOND HALF SCORING SPREE
The New York Stars, needing a victory to clinch the AFA East Division, played a very uninspiring opening 30 minutes of football against the Boston Americans yesterday and trailed 9-3 at the half. The second half was a completely different story as the Yanks proved very accommodating in the third quarter when three consecutive Boston fumbles were returned for New York touchdowns in a span of just over a minute early. That would key a 28-point third quarter as the Stars went on to win by a 34-9 margin over Boston.
At the same time in Washington, the Wasps needed to beat Detroit and hope Boston could come through against the Stars to allow the Washington eleven to claim its first-ever division title. It was not to be but that was through no fault of the Wasps on this day as Washington rallied from a 20-7 deficit to beat the Motor City crew 24-20.
There was also a big rally in Pittsburgh as the winless Paladins opened a 21-7 lead on the visiting Chicago Wildcats in the first half only to see the Wildcats, in desperate need of a victory to claim the West Division title, rally with 26 unanswered points to claim a 33-21 victory and the right to travel to New York for next week's title game. The other game on the season ending Sunday saw Philadelphia blast Cincinnati 35-7.

GRID KINGS CLINCH EAST DIVISION
Will Face Cowboys in CFC Title Game
The Brooklyn Kings and Kansas City Cowboys will meet in the very first championship game for the Continental Football Conference. The Kings recovered from a 5-game losing streak in the middle of the season with three straight victories including a big 10-6 win over the New York Gothams yesterday to clinch top spot in the East. The Gothams seemed to be well in control of the division just a few short weeks ago but a disasterous three game losing skid at Gothams Stadium ended their championship game hopes.
It may not matter much in the big picture anyway as the Kansas City Cowboys will be the overwhelming favourite after they finished their season with a 13-1 record following a 27-14 victory over the Los Angeles Lobos. Cowboys quarterback Pat Chappell threw for 221 yards and one touchdown in the game allowing the former three-sport star at St Magnus to establish a new pro football record for passing yards in a season and touchdowns thrown.
The Chicago Comets finished strong. After winning just 2 games all season they doubled that total in the final week with a 7-0 victory in New York on Tuesday to help crush the Gothams title game hopes before ending their seaosn with a 34-6 blasting off the Buffalo Bulls. There are two games next weekend to close out the season with Buffalo visiting New York and Los Angeles hosting San Francisco but neither has any impact on the championship game picture.

MILE HIGH STATE CLAIMS SOUTHWESTERN CLASSIC BERTH
The Mile High State Falcons have earned the final spot in the record 10 Classic games set to be played on January 1. The Falcons beat Cache Valley 14-3 Saturday to finish in first place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Alliance. Both clubs had identical 5-1 section records but the head to head win earns the Falcons the nod over the Cowboys. Mile High State will face 8-2 Abilene Baptist in the Southwestern Classic on New Years Day. It was not all bad news for Cache Valley as last week the Cowboys were invited to play Red River State in the Desert Classic.

A STORM BREWING IN SOUTHWEST
The Texas Gulf Coast Hurricanes have built a program that regularly earns a trip to the National Tournament, having not missed the event in six years. They have dominated the Southwest Alliance in recent years, posting a 39-3 section record since the start of the 1943-44 season. However, once they reach the national stage the Hurricanes weaknesses have been exposed and they have never advanced past the National Quarterfinals.
Led by a pair of Texas boys in junior forward Darren Fuhrman and guard Dusty Cardin -each of whom are scoring in the double-digits this season, the Hurricanes hope their 8-0 start to the season is a sign of good things to come. No Southwest Alliance school has played in New York in April since Red River State's miracle run to the semi-finals of the 1925-26 tournament but the Hurricanes -with impressive wins over St Magnus, Brunswick and Opelika State already this season- are hoping to end that trend.
The Hurricanes received a first place vote in the weekly rankings, something that has not happened very often -if ever- before but they have a huge test this week when the travel to Louisiana to take on a highly regarded Bayou State team that is 2-0 to start the season and led by Scott Winner -one of the best guards in the nation. That game, set for Wednesday, and a December 29th visit to Latrobe, Pa. to face St Blane are two of the toughest challenges the Hurricanes will need to overcome before their conference slate gets underway in mid-January.
