DALLAS MAKES SPLASH WITH RECORD GLA CONTRACT
The Great Western League took one more step towards being considered a serious competitor for the long-standing Federally Aligned Baseball Leagues after the Dallas Centurions signed veteran third baseman Ken Mayhugh to a record-breaking contract for the new big league loop.
The deal, while it still pales in comparison to what the top stars in the Federal and Continental Associations receive, will pay the 34-year-old $35,000 in 1947, nearly double what he received from the Chicago Chiefs this past season. It is by far the most Mayhugh has ever earned in a season and $14,000 more than the next highest player in the GWL -San Francisco's Bob Land who hit .401 last season.
The move should be applauded by players in both leagues as it is clear sign the western clubs are willing to spend money and it can't help but have an impact on salaries in the eastern loop at some point. The magnates on both sides need to be careful and take heed of lessons taught half a century ago when rival leagues waiving checkbooks indiscriminately nearly bankrupt the game and certainly destroyed a number of franchises. If the western clubs ever decide to go after FABL contracted players, it will potentially lead to a situation very similar to the one that prompted the creation of FABL in 1891 to begin with.
As for Mayhugh, well, he better be paying for a lot of team dinners in Dallas. His salary is more than the paychecks of the next three highest paid Centurions combined. He was simply lucky enough to be in the right place and the right time. Mayhugh has the talent to make him one of the better players in the GWL. Now he needs to start earning all of that money on the field.
CUBAN WINTER LEAGUE STANDINGS AND LEADERS
WILD FINAL WEEKEND AHEAD IN AFA
Both Division Races Up For Grabs
The American Football Association could not have asked for a much more excitement heading in to next weekend's season ending game. The outcome of both division races hinges on three games to close out the regular campaign. It was brought about by a pair of thrilling duels yesterday that saw the top two clubs in both the East and West go head-to-head.
In the East Division, the New York Stars and Washington Wasps are now tied for first place with identical 7-3 records after the New Yorkers pulled out a 14-0 victory in a game dominated by the Stars running game. Tom Griggs ran for 121 yards and both touchdowns while Mark Hedge added 99 and Jerry McElheny -who has been very quiet this season- chipped in with 76 yards on 14 carries.
Both New York scores came in the second half and each was set up by some big plays involving Griggs. The first score saw Griggs race for 82 yards before being brought down on the Wasps 3 yards line. After Mark Hedge failed to gain anything on 2 attempts through the middle of the line and Griggs threw an incomplete pass attempt Dave Gunther, the home side decide to go for it on 4th and 3 rather than kick the field goal. It paid off as Griggs kept it himself and bulled his way in to the endzone to put the Stars up 7-0.
Washington thought they had tied the game late in the third quarter when Ed Watson intercepted a Griggs pass and raced untouched 52 yards into the endzone but the play was called back on a Wasps penalty. Early in the fourth the Stars doubled their lead with Griggs scrambling for a 4 yard touchdown a few plays after he had back to back long passes of 24 yards to George Gill and 28 yards to Mike Akerly. Washington made a last ditched effort with a long drive but it fell just short as Stars defender George Griggs interecepted a Bob Krohn pass in the New York endzone with just under 4 minutes remaining. New York then ate up the rest of the clock thanks to their strong ground game.
The Stars win would give them the tie-breaker should both they and Washington win next weekend but a New York loss to Boston opens the door for either the Americans or the Wasps. A Stars loss and a Wasps win gives Washington their first ever division title but if New York loses to Boston and Washington falls in Detroit the tie-breaker should go to the Americans.
*** Wildcats Control Destiny in West ***
The West is a little less convoluted. Cleveland is done its slate of games for the year with a 6-4-1 record after the Finches fell 28-24 in a wild one at Chicago against the Wildcats. Chicago is 6-4 and finishes out their season against winless Pittsburgh. If the Wildcats win as they are widely expected to, they will win the West Division for the first time in 3 years. A Chicago loss would give the crown to the Finches, who have not played in the AFA title game since 1935.
There were plenty of emotional swings at Whitney Park yesterday. The Wildcats caught a huge break early when Finches quarterback Phil Colvin threw one of his 22 interceptions on the year less than a minute into the contest. Chicago capitalized with a 49 yard pass from Gus Brown to Freeman Stahlberg on their first play from scrimmage and then a 4 yard scoring toss to Tom Gipson one play later and it was quickly 7-0 for the Wildcats. Another Colvin interception 10 minutes later led to the second Chicago major -this one on a Gus Brown scramble for 12 yards to make it 14-0. Chicago then committed a pair of turnovers of their own on a Brown fumble and then an interception but the Finches could only come away with 3 points and trailed 14-3 at the break.
That changed early in the second half as Cleveland looked to be suddenly back on track. After forcing a 3-and-out on Chicago's first possession after the break the Finches marched on a 57-yard scoring drive keyed by a Steve Watts 26 yard run to cut the Wildcats lead to 14-10. Chicago missed on a field goal opportunity and the Finches offense went right back to work, with a quick 4-play drive capped by a 53-yard Dave Nicholson touchdown run and suddenly the Finches had the lead at 17-14 -and they were not done. The next Chicago series ended quickly and after a pair of 19-yard passes from Colvin it was Steve Watts coming up with another big play. This one was a 19-yard touchdown run as the third quarter came to an end put Cleveland ahead 24-14 and it appeared the Finches were on their way to the AFA title game for the first time since 1935.
*** Dramatic Finish in Chicago ***
Cleveland led 24-14 entering the final quarter and seemed to have all the momentum. That is when Gus Brown took over. The Wildcats quarterback drove his club 72 yards in a 15-play drive lasting nearly 7 minutes and ended with Brown hitting Milt Haley in the endzone for a 6-yard score to cut the Finches lead to 24-21. The ensuing kickoff was fumbled by the Finches and the Wildcats were in field goal range. Bob Chick was called on to try and tie the game with a 37 yarder, but it missed its mark and Finches still held the lead.
Cleveland then drove into field goal range for a chance to increase their lead with just 4:39 remaining but like Chick, the Finches Tommy Milatz was unsuccessful on his 36-yard attempt and the score held at 24-21 Cleveland.
Time was now becoming a factor as Brown began another long drive from his own 20 yard line. He hit Louie Dunlap for back to back passes of 18 and 8 yards. Bob Frum ran for 11. Cleveland hurt their own cause with a pair of penalties including a costly personal foul call with 2 minutes remaining to set up a first and goal on the Cleveland 10 yard line. Frum made it halfway to the endzone with a 5 yard run on first down. Brown tried a pass to Dunlap on second down but it was broken up and on third down he tried the same target with just a minute and a half remaining and Chicago's playoff hopes on the line. This one connected and the Wildcats had battled back to retake the lead at 28-24. Colvin tried a last ditched pass for the Finches but it was intercepted by Frum in the final minute and the Wildcats hung on for the win.
*** Boston Stays Alive With Win ***
The Detroit Maroons slim playoff hopes ended with a 20-14 loss in Boston but that win kept the Americans slight chance of returning to the championship game to defend the title they won against Detroit last December still alive. Boston needs to win New York next week and have Washington lose at home to Detroit.
In the other weekend games the St Louis Ramblers trimmed Philadelphia 10-3 while on Thanksgiving Day the Cincinnati Tigers erupted for 33 points in the third quarter to hammer the winless Pittsburgh Paladins 39-7.

COWBOYS RIDING HIGH IN CFC WEST
The hometown Kansas City Cowboys outgunned the San Francisco Wings 31-27 in a thrilling game played before a capacity crowd of 15,000 in a jammed Packer Park that is designed to hold 12,500. The win improves the Cowboys record to 12-1 and clinches the West Division crown ensuring the Cowboys of an appearance in the first-ever Continental Football Conference Championship game.
Their opponent remains very much in doubt as New York and Brooklyn have much left to decide in the East Division. Brooklyn beat Buffalo 31-14 behind a 218 yard passing, 105 yard rushing day from Jackie Wendt. That moves the Kings record to 6-7 with 1 game remaining. That game will be against the Gothams, who were off last week but have 3 games left on their slate including a December 9th date with the Kings at Gothams Stadium.
The only other CFC game over the weekend saw the Los Angeles Lobos double New Orleans 28-14 to move ahead of San Francisco and into second place in the West Division.

ROME STATE WINS ANNUAL GRUDGE MATCH WITH ANNAPOLIS MARITIME
Their winning streak snapped two weeks ago with the shocking loss to Pierpont, and any thoughts of playing in a New Years Classic game now forgotten, Rome State did manage to keep another streak going as the Centurions blanked a downtrodden Annapolis Maritime squad 20-0 in the annual Thanksgiving Weekend tussle between the two service academies. The victory marked the third consecutive year that Rome State has held the bragging rights and occurred before a capacity crowd that included President Truman at Philadelphia's Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Stadium. It marked the final appearance in a Rome State football uniform for the great backfield duo of Gus Thompson and Chet Donelson, each seemingly assured of being named to the All-America team for the third straight year. Each found the endzone one last time in the contest.
*** St Blane Swamps Dolphins 37-0 to Remain Number One ***
The St Blane Fighting Saints had no letup despite receiving the bad news they would not be heading to California on New Years Day to play in the East-West Classic after the agreement reached guaranteeing the Great Lakes Alliance champion the trip west. The Saints took out their frustrations on a coast club, pounding Coastal California 37-0 in their season finale at Latrobe, Pa. The victory improves the Saints record to 8-0-1, with only a tie against Rome State to provide any sort of blemish and insures they will remain the top ranked team in the nation heading into the New Year's games.
Following the contest, the Saints announced that they will head to Houston for January 1 and will meet Midwestern Conference champion Payne State which finished with a perfect 10-0 record following a narrow 14-12 victory over Arkansas A&T Saturday.
NEW YEAR'S CLASSIC GAME SLATE
The matchups for New Years Day are nearly finalized and there will be record 10 Classic games contested. There are two remaining undecided slots. One is in the Southwestern Classic which will be held in San Antionio, Texas. Abilene Baptist will represent the Southern Border Association in the game, and they will face the champion of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Alliance. The champion in that section will hinge on next Saturday's game between Mile High State and Cache Valley. The other opening is the need for an opponent for Red River State in the Desert Classic. Word is an announcement on that will come in the next few days.

CLASSIC DEAL IRKS COYOTES, DOLPHINS
If the local 'office of the FBI wants to get away from easy stuff' like tracking down kidnapers, counterfeiters and spies it can start today trying to find somebody hereabouts who endorses yesterday's West Coast Athletic Association faculty representatives' vote excluding the St Blane football team from the East-West Classic in favor of the Great Lakes Alliance champ.
This scribe toured the Coastal and CCLA campuses yesterday in quest 'of opinions and the least vitriolic reaction he got was "stupid." That came from a highly place Dolphins grid staffer who spoke off the record. It is rare Dolphins and Coyotes are on the same page but the CCLA graduate manager had much the same reaction, stating for publication, "I don't understand it. The public wants to see the top team in the nation -which is St Blane- and should have been given the chance. I'm disappointed."
Old grads from both institutions gave out with statements that, if reprinted, would void this sheet's second class mailing privileges. The players are also disappointed, especially at CCLA which now faces the prospects of playing 6th ranked Detroit City College instead of St Blane.
"I am sorry that the WCAA passed up a chance to bring the top team in the nation out here," opined CCLA end Ray Fitzgerald. "We want the opportunity to prove we are the best team in the country, and to do that we have to beat the best. No knock on Detroit, but the Fighting Saints are number one and we would sure have liked a shot at them."
The reaction across the state was much the same. The East-West Classic is just that -a classic- and it does not feel like it has the same stature now that the best the east has to offer will not be allowed to participate. One WCAA coach want as far to say the decision to tie the classic with the Great Lakes Alliance has destroyed the Classic's prestige.
MESSER LEADING LIBERTY COLLEGE
Liberty College was surprised by Redwood University in their pre-season tournament opener but since that upset loss the Bells have reeled off six straight victories as they rang their way past a series of Academia Alliance schools on their early season slate.
Junior center Ward Messer has been the big reason for the Bells recent stretch and the younger brother of the New York Gothams baseball star is leading his school in both points and rebounds. Messer had a strong week with 17 points and 10 boards in a 47-37 win over Grafton on Tuesday followed by 16 points in a tight 48-46 win over Sadler Saturday. On the season Messer is averaging 11.6 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. He is only a junior but pro scouts are already calling him the best pro prospect in his draft class and second only to Miami State senior and reigning national player of the year Long Werth out of all collegiate cage players.

MILLER KNOCKS OUT PHILLIPS
Dan Miller, an underhanded body puncher from Oakland took care of John Phillips' 8-fight winning streak in short order in Minneapolis on Wednesday evening. Miller, who fancies himself a contender for Hector Sawyer's title, boosted his record to 32-7-1 with the knockout, which came midway through the fifth round.
Miller clearly was too much speed for the big fighter from Chicago and continuously caught Phillips with counter punches in a bout where the only question was how long would it take Miller to get the knockout. The 29 year old Miller was listed as the #5 contender for Sawyer's crown in the most recent TWIFB boxing rankings.

The Week That Was
Current events from the week ending 12/01/1946
- Union leader John L Lewis was ordered to stand trial for contempt of court after failing to call off the nationwide soft coal strike. Soft coal operators have said they "would be very happy" to start new contract negotiations with Lewis that would end the now 11 day old strike.
- The Federal Government has acted yesterday to chalk up retroactive fines of $2 per day against individual miners for each day of the soft coal strike.
- An Arkansas Senator is pushing for Congress to outlaw strikes and compel arbitration of labour disputes in basic industries, such as coal mining, which directly affect the welfare of the country.
- Soviet Foreign Minister Molotov has demanded the immediate outlawing of the atomic bomb and called on member countries of the UN to put an end to the arms race "which has begun."
- The Soviets are reported to be set to split there zone of German occupation into five different states, each with separate provincial government. That move appears to be a sharp change in Soviet policy for Germany and was interpreted as indicating Moscow had swung over to the Western view that Germany should have a government on "federal-state" lines instead of a strong central administration.
- Steel helmeted British soldiers, armed with tear gas, fire hoses and clubs, put down a riot of shouting Jewish refugees trying to leave an illegal immigrant ship at port in Palestine. A day later riots spread inland with hundreds injured in an outburst of gunfire and explosives climaxed by two attacks on a Jerusalem police station.
- President Truman and a party of 150 guests spent Saturday in Philadelphia, cheering on at the annual Rome State-Annapolis Maritime football game.
