CUBAN LEAGUE SET TO BEGIN PLAY
FABL's newest league -the Cuban Winter League- is set to begin its season this week. The eight club loop is designed to showcase some of the up and coming talent of the sport and give players close to a big league opportunity a chance to showcase their skills before league scouts.
Here are some of the top prospects to keep an eye on in the league.
CAMAGUEY COYOTES (Boston & Toronto)- Among the notables are 22 year old pitcher Otis Porter, who was taken 7th overall by Toronto in the 1945 draft. Porter is one of 4 first round picks on this team joining fellow Wolves prospect SS John Fast and Boston first rounders Alf Keefer -a 22 year old pitcher- and 23 year old first baseman Hal Renard. Boston also includes the eldest of its three highly touted outfielders selected last year in former Bluegrass State star Dick Helfand.
CINEFUEGOS CROCODILES (Chiefs & Montreal)- The Crocodiles roster features a pair of players the Chicago Chiefs are very high on in 23 year old outfielder Charles Yates and 22 year old shortstop Lou Hooker.
HAVANA SHARKS (Detroit & Cincinnati)- The Sharks will be led by a pair of top thirty Detroit Dynamos prospects in Stan Kleminski and Tommy Griffin. Detroit will also give highly touted but just 18 year old pitcher Fred Washington some exposure to high level baseball. Most of the Cannons top prospects are too young for the league but keep an eye on shortstop Ted Stacy, former second round pick CF Karl Berggren and veteran minor league pitcher Mickey Mills.
HOLGUIN HAWKS (Gothams & Sailors)- There will be plenty of attention on the Hawks as it will be a chance to get a good look at top prospect Billy Forbes, a centerfielder who played 51 games for the Sailors this past season. Three former first round picks will be in the mound in Sailors prospect Hoppy Johnson plus a pair of 22 year old Gothams in Hal Friedlander and Jake Roberts.
MANZANILLO PALMS (Keystones & Stars)- Joe Quade was local kid taken third overall by the Philadelphia Keystones but missed four seasons due to the war. He was at AAA Louisville last season and the Cuban League will be a good test of his readiness for the big club. The Keystones also have 1945 first round Nate Power- a first baseman- while the Stars will showcase their highly touted catching prospects Dan Atwood, pitcher Bill Chapman and outfielder Clyde Fleenor.
MATANZAS BUCCANEERS (Pittsburgh & Brooklyn)- Pat Petty was the third overall selection in 1943 by the Brooklyn Kings and shortstop Billy Bryant, a first rounder by Brooklyn in 1941 will highlight this team. On the Pittsburgh side keep an eye on Pat Wolter, a pitcher ranked #15 on the OSA list.
SANTA CLARA STALLIONS (Washington & Cougars) - The Cougars have a deep farm system and it will be well represented by Duke Bybee, a former fourth rounder who made a brief appearance with the big club in 1945. The only first rounder on this club is Bob Schmelz, a second baseman selected in 1942 by Detroit who is now a Cougars prospect.
SANTIAGO SCORPIONS (St Louis & Cleveland)- This will be a great chance to see Sherry Doyal, a Pioneers first rounder ranked the 5th best prospect in the game by OSA. From Cleveland there is John Jackson, a 22 year old righthander who was selected 4th overall in 1942 and won 19 games at Class A this past season. It might also be a chance for Dave McCraw to prove to St Louis fans that the Pioneers did not make a mistake taking the shortstop in the first round of the 1944 draft.
NAHC SEASON PREVIEW
The 1946-47 NAHC season gets underway this Friday with action on two fronts and before the weekend is done seven games will be in the books. The season opener will see the defending champion Boston Bees get things started at Lake Side Arena in Chicago against the Packers while the Brooklyn Eagles, winners of just 8 games over the past three seasons combined, hope to begin to turn things around with a strong showing at home against the Montreal Valiants.
Here is a look at the top ten players in the game according to the league scouting service.
Code:

2 Wilbur Chandler C BOS 28
3 Bobbie Sauer C TOR 31
4 Quinton Pollack C BKN 24
5 Gordie Broadway G TOR 32

7 Orval Cabbell C NY 28

Our 1946-47 predicted order of finish for the NAHC looks like this
1- TORONTO DUKES: The Dukes had the best regular season record in the NAHC a year ago but bowed out in the first round of the playoffs after being swept by fourth place Montreal. Toronto had won the two previous Challenge Cups and will go as far as Gordie Broadway -the best goaltender in the NAHC- will take them. Broadway, won the Juneau Award a year ago as the top netminder and the 32 year old has backstopped the Dukes to three Cups in his career. For those worried he may start to show his age, Broadway posted the lowest goals against average and highest save percentage of his career last season. Toronto also has plenty of offense led by the big line of Bobbie Sauer (22-30-52) between Herb Burdette (13-17-30) and Les Carlson (17-30-47) plus a supporting cast that includes Laurel Albers (15-25-40) and Syl Beam (13-12-25). If there is a weakspot in Toronto it would be on the blueline although towering 25 year old JC Martel, who was acquired from Montreal over the summer, might help fill that gap.
2- MONTREAL VALIANTS: The Valians just nosed out Detroit for the final playoff spot before pulling off a major upset of Toronto in the semi-finals. They will now need to prove that was not a fluke and will try to advance one step further in the upcoming season with a goal of claiming their first Challenge Cup since 1928. Montreal may have the best collection of forwards in the NAHC -a balanced unit with depth led by the trio of Clarence Skinner (23-27-50), Doug Lynch (16-24-40) and 23 year old Brett Lanceleve (14-18-32), who won the McLeod Trohy as top newcomer a year ago. The Valiants may well have a second straight rookie of the year winner if Adam Sandford can live up to the potential he showed as a minor leaguer in Pittsburgh a year ago. 30 year old Millard Touhey is a solid, veteran goaltender and he is protected by a pretty decent defense headed by veteran Leo Bernard (6-13-19).
3- BOSTON BEES: Last season's Challenge Cup win was a bit of a surprise but the city of Boston, with 4 Cups since 1940-41 and 6 overall is used to supporting a winner. The local baseball Minutemen and football Americans certainly add to the winning tradition in New England. The offense has plenty of talent led by reigning NAHC scoring champ Jim Morey (27-34-61), Tommy Hart (10-30-40) and hopefully a full season out of 28 year old Wilbur Chandler (14-12-26). The 3-time winner of the McDaniels Trophy as league MVP missed half of last season with an arm injury. As good as the Boston offense is the defense might be even better with 4 rearguards expected to be among the top players in the loop. They are holdovers Len Bentley (7-13-20) and Willis Beane (9-23-32) and newcomer Bryant Williams (3-17-20), who was cut loose by Toronto after six seasons with the Dukes. Conn Cundiff (6-6-12), a 23 year old who made his NAHC debut with the Bees last season, gives Boston arguably the best top 4 on the blueline in the league.
If there is a weak spot in Boston it is between the pipes. Strong goaltending had been a tradition with the Bees starting with the great Tommy Kearns a decade and a half ago and more recently Tom Brockers, who won 3 Juneau Trophies before moving on to Brooklyn. 20 year old Peirre Melancon (25-11-4, 2.03) did a decent job a year ago but there are worries that he may be the only thing holding the Bees back from a second straight Cup.
EDTIORS NOTE- A late injury after this preview was compiled has been reported by Boston star William Chandler. He is expected to miss most of the season.
4- CHICAGO PACKERS: The Packers have two outstanding goaltenders and possibly the best player in the league in 26 year old center Tommy Burns (28-29-57), who teams up nicely with his winger and older brother Wes Burns (18-32-50) to make a very dangerous offensive combination. Add in right winger Marty Mahoney (12-23-35) and the Packers have a strong first line but depth upfront is a worry. Jerry Finch (3-10-13) and 22 year old second year man Pete Moreau (8-6-14) are a solid number one D-pair and goaltender Norm Hanson won the job between the pipes in a 3-way battle a year ago but may be pushed by promising rookie Michael Cleghorn, who was signed away from the minor league Philadelphia Rascals.
5- BROOKLYN EAGLES: It has been an awful time for the Eagles ever since their move from New York City and
a 37-214-37 record over the past six years has not endeared them to Brooklyn fans. The Eagles hit rock bottom a year ago when they won just 2 of 48 games but there is reason for optimism this time around. The Eagles revamped their offense -which was the worst in the league a year ago- with the addition of three rookie pivots in Quinton Pollack, Ian Doyle and Jarrett McGlynn. Pollack may step in and be one of the top scorers in the league at age 23 after smashing the Great Western Hockey League points record a season ago with 28 goals and 71 points in 48 games for the Tacoma Lions. The 22 year old Doyle is also an offensive threat with 33 points for Syracuse of the Hockey Association of America a year ago, as is McGlynn, a 25 year old who average a point a game for Vancouver of the GWHL last season. There is still a shortage of depth with the Eagles but if Tom Brockers, who won 4 Juneau Awards during his time in Boston, can stand tall and hold them in games the Eagles may just surprise some teams.
6- DETROIT MOTORS: For the second straight season the Motors narrowly missed the playoffs and we have a feeling that trend might continue. 23 year old third-year man Henri Chasse (20-15-2, 2.96) is a solid goaltender but the team lacks a big time offensive star and may be short of depth on the blueline. Veteran Shel Herron (6-25-31) is one of the best defenders in the league and there are a pair of newcomers up front who will be counted on to pick up the slack for aging captain Miles Barfield (12-15-27). The new arrivals include 24 year old wingers Remy Emond and Leon Seguin who are both up from minor league Buffalo.
7- NEW YORK SHAMROCKS: The Shamrocks may end up battling it out with Detroit (and possibly Brooklyn) for last place so it seems unlikely their 4 year playoff drought will come to an end this March. 28 year old center Orval Cabbell (10-25-35) is as steady as they come and Bert McCalley (5-18-23) provides veteran leadership on the blueline but depth looks like a potential issue. If there is a player to watch for a breakout year it might well be 25 year old winger Tommy Brecia (17-13-30). Last year's breakout star was goaltender Etienne Tremblay (14-22-8, 2.33) and the Shamrocks will need another step forward from the 24 year old this season. Kurt Stone has gone 99-138-51 over the past six seasons as head coach and a slow start this year might cause the Shamrocks to make a change behind the bench.

ROME STATE FALLS TO PIERPONT
The mighty have fallen. Rome State is unbeaten no more as Pierpont upset the Centurions juggernaut 30-27 handing the service academy its first loss since the final game of the 1943 season. It was by all accounts a shocking result and a game that made the discussion over whether the Centurions would or would not play in the East-West Classic meaningless.
The Pierpont Purple are not a team to be taken lightly, but few gave them any hope of knocking off Rome State -even with the Centurions 25 game winning streak coming to an end with a tie against St Blane last Saturday. The Pierpont linemen played the game of their lives, doing enough to slow down the Centurions two-headed monster running duo of Gus Thompson and Chet Donelson while still being able to create holes for their collection of backfield aces.
St Blane can now lay full claim to the number one ranking as they followed up that tie in New York with the Centurions a week ago by shellacking St Magnus 37-0. Southern powers Cumberland and Bayou State also overtook the Centurions in the weekly rankings. Both are 7-0-1 after wins Saturday. The Explorers knocked Commonwealth Catholic out of the top ten with a 27-23 victory while the Cougars had little trouble with Miami State in a 31-7 triumph.
The Rome State loss likely seals the deal for the Great Lakes Alliance champ to head west for New Years Day and odds are it will be the Detroit City College Knights making their first appearance ever in the East-West Classic. The Knights dumped Wisconsin State 30-3 Saturday and now only need a solid showing against their rivals from Central Ohio next weekend to punch a ticket to Santa Ana for the New Year celebration. Central Ohio is in the midst of a down year with a 2-5-1 record. The western half of the East-West Classic will likely be determined next week when CCLA and Coastal California -both unbeaten in section play- meet for their annual battle for supremacy in Tinseltown.

DEFENDING CHAMPION YANKS REELING
The Boston Americans hopes of a return trip to the American Football Championship game and a chance to defend their league title have been dealt a serious blow with back to back losses. The Americans lost to Cincinnati at home a week ago and yesterday were blanked 24-0 in Chicago by the Wildcats. Those two losses drop the Yanks record to 5-3 and with 3 games remaining in the season they trail the front-running Washington Wasps by a game for the East Division lead.
Bob Krohn tossed a pair of touchdown passes to lead the Wasps to a 28-0 shutout of Cleveland, a result that tightened things up in the West Division as well as gave the Washington eleven a seat at the top of the Eastern table. Cleveland's loss coupled with Detroit's slow start but strong finish in a 30-17 victory over Pittsburgh left the Finches and Maroons tied for the West lead although Detroit does have a game in hand. The other two results on Sunday had the New York Stars win at home over Cincinnati by a 35-14 count while Philadelphia dumped St Louis 31-7.

CHAPPELL LEADS COWBOYS TO ANOTHER WIN
Pat Chappell and the Kansas City Cowboys continue to be the class of the Continental Football Conference in its inaugural year. Chappell, who is putting up numbers unheard of from a professional quarterback, had just another day at the office by his standards in passing for 208 yards and 2 touchdowns to lead the Cowboys to a 38-13 victory in Brooklyn. Chappell, with three games remaining, is on pace to throw 22 touchdown passes and for more than 2,200 yards this season. Del Thomas of the AFA's Boston Americans holds the single season passing yardage record when he threw for 2,035 in 1943 although fans of the original pro league will quickly point out that Chappell's season is longer than the one Thomas excelled in. CFC fans might counter that Chappell is only a rookie this season and the future is bound to be even brighter.
The Kansas City wins keeps the Cowboys a game up on 9-2 San Francisco in the heated battle for West Division supremacy. The Wings rebounded from an upset loss in New York last week by beating the Chicago Comets 21-10 yesterday. Elsewhere the Los Angeles Lobos outscored Buffalo 38-24 while the East Division leading New York Gothams rallied to beat New Orleans 24-10.

AIAA SEASON GETS UNDERWAY AS TUNE-UP TOURNAMENTS COMPLETED
The new collegiate basketball season got underway this weekend after the last of the pre-season tip-off tournaments were completed during the week. Here is a look at each of the tournament winners.
JACK EASTON TIP-OFF CLASSIC - Boston
Upsets were the story on the opening day as CCLA and Detroit City College both fell. Elyria shocked the Knights 68-60 while Bigsby College got the best of the Coyotes with a 35-31 win. The eventual champion would be the University of New Jersey with Warriors beating Elyria 37-28 in Saturday's finale. DCC and CCLA each won on Friday setting up a consolation showdown won by the Great Lakes Alliance side 37-34.
BIGSBY FESTIVAL -New York City
A surprise champion in Whitney College of the Great Lakes Alliance after the Engineers dumped Ferguson 59-37 in the finals of the 8 team field. The Engineers beat St Gordius and Western State to reach the championship game. Whitney College has had some success in recent years including a 19-11 season that earned then a berth in the AIAA tournament a year ago. The Engineers are expecting another tournament appearance this time around thanks to their two star forwards in Ruben Gilbert and Terry Pendergrass.
HEART OF TEXAS - Houston
North Carolina Tech is one of TWIFB's preseason teams to beat in collegiate basketball and they had little trouble against a weaker field in the Texas tournament. The Techsters beat Harrisburg State 48-36 on Wednesday and followed that up with wins over Queen City (56-47) and finally Oklahoma Bible College by a 53-45 score in the title game. The event marked the debut of the nation's top ranked incoming freshman and Mike Carter did not disappoint, averaging 10 points per game. The big story for NC Tech was Clarence Barton as the senior forward poured in 25 points in the opener and averaged 19.0 ppg in the event.
KING OF THE SOUTH - Durham, NC
The host Carolina Poly Cardinals are another team expected to have a long run in the March tournament and they started their season off with a pair of wins over a pretty weak field in a tournament they hosted. The Cardinals started with a 48-39 victory over East Missouri Seminary before dumping Allentown State 56-49 in the championship game. As expected senior Paul Cowans and sophomore guard Major Belk led the way for Carolina Poly.
WEST COAST FESTIVAL - San Francisco
Most expected an Iowa school to prevail in the 8 team field but it was the Western Iowa Canaries they were thinking of. The Canaries lost in the opening round 39-35 to George Fox University so instead it was Iowa A&M that emerged with the banner after the Bulls went 3-0 in the event. First up was a 46-30 win over Bliss College followed by a narrow 43-41 victory over Cowpens State. The final saw the Bulls drop Harper College 49-41 and perhaps give them hopes of ending a 5 year spring tournament drought.

WELTER CONTENDERS COLLIDE IN OAKLAND
One big bout of note last week occurred on the west coast when a pair of fighters that have spent some time in the quarterly TWIFB top fighters' rankings squared off in Oakland. The bout saw Carl Taylor, who had a title shot a year ago and is still considered #2 contender in his weight class, score a unanimous decision over Ben 'Baby Face' Bishop. Bishop's stock dropped last year when he lost to Harold Stephens and despite recent knockout wins over both Mitchell McFadden and John Jackson, the loss to Taylor is going to set him back further.
Taylor is a 29 year old Baltimore-born fighter with a 21-3-2 career record. He looked very impressive in beating current World Champ Mark Westlake in a decision a little over a year ago to set up his title opportunity. However, he was badly outclassed by Dennis O'Keefe with the title on the line. O'Keefe would lose the belt to Westlake in his first defense. The win over Bishop, who drops to 23-4-1, may just pave the way for Taylor to get another shot at the title.

The Week That Was
Current events from the week ending 11/17/1946
- President Truman pledges co-operation with Congress as necessary to avoid "serious difficulties". It was the President's first public address since last week's election which swept the Republicans into power in Congress.
- Truman also told the nation in an Armistice Day message that "the welfare of the United States and the welfare of the world are wrapped up in one package -peace and welfare of the world as a whole."
- More trouble in the United Nations as Russia has assalied British policies on Palestine and the United States countered with a charge that the Soviets threatened to 'jeopardize" the creation of a trusteeship council.
- After a nearly month long strike, pilots at Trans World Airlines are back on the job this week after an agreement was reached to submit the dispute over pay and working rules to arbitration.
- Looks like another coal strike is looming with union boss John L Lewis set to begin a nationwide soft coal strike deadline for midnight Wednesday. One high Government official puts the chances of avoiding a strike as "about 1 in 10" and that was based on the slim hope that Mr Lewis would reconsider his rejection of a Government 60-day truce proposal.
