Still learning about hockey and I have a question regarding the preseason to regular season roster.

I will be heading into free agency and the draft soon. Can I have those guys up for the preseason and then send them down without having them go through the waiver process? Basically, is it free demotions at that time?

I don't want to give extra guys the experience if I will be at risk of losing them when going down.
